Covid/flu jab date and Treatment date (chemo plus immuno) too close together.

Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I'm having treatment early next week and have my covid jab tomoorow. So there's only two days between both.  I meant to ask my Oncologist whether it's OK to have a covid jab so close to the treatment date, but forgot.

And now it's the weekend so I won't be able to get hold of them.

Any advice?

Will the immunotherapy be less effective if I've just had my covid and flu booster? Or could it cause a bad reaction? Or does it not matter? And should I go ahead and have the booster tomorrow anyway.

I'd rather cancel the booster (for the time being) than risk delaying cancer treatment. What would you do?

Thanks x

  • Hi  Harebelle - I had my covid jab scheduled for a time when my immunotherapy was paused due to immune related adverse event and I was on a low dose of steroids to rectify the situation.  I asked my onco if it was OK to get the covid jab.  He advised it's best not to, because if I had more reactions to the treatment the covid jab became a potential cause, so it was best to keep them separate.  Otherwise no problem.  I kept rescheduling the covid job until I was back on schedule with the immunotherapy, then got it done.

  • Hi Harebelle,

I had my Covid jab (Moderna) and Flu jab together on Saturday 8th October.
I had my Immunotherapy (Pembolizumab) on Tuesday 11th October.
So, three full days in between. Not a problem.

Worst case scenario, I'd have thought the risk from an infection of covid or flu is higher than the risk of delaying a day or two before an immunotherapy infusion. Best case scenario, there won't be an issue.

In your place, I would go ahead with the jabs then tell them at immunotherapy in the expectation that the treatment would go ahead as scheduled. Probably best to phone immunotherapy early though, just in case, as I know Pembrolizumab has to be got ready just before it's used and is really expensive.

    kind regards,
    Steve
