Switching from chemo/immuno to radiotherapy

I have been on pemetrexed and pembrolizumab for nine months (with carboplatin the first 4 treatments).  At first the tumor was shrinking and there was no spread, but the past three months I have had infections after every treatment, and have been feeling bad.  The latest scan shows no further tumor shrinkage, but still no spread, so I have had the chemo/immuno stopped and am about to start on a course of radiotherapy.   I am a bit scared about this switch, as it seems like my last chance.  Does anyone else have experience of this change in treatment?

  • Hi Gadjo

Please do not think that radiotherapy is in some way a second-rate treatment. Radiotherapy is a very effective treatment in its own right. That your initial chemical treatment has shrunk the tumours will help with the radiotherapy.  For those of us who had chemoradiation, the aim is for the chemo to shrink the tumour ahead of the start of the radiotherapy.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Thank you Kegsy.

  • Hi Gadjo I agree with Kegsy, radiotherapy is very effective. I did not have chemo, but had 5 sessions of high dose radiotherapy, which shrunk my tumour initially by 50%. Radiotherapy builds up in your body and continues to work for many months after the treatment has ended. All cancer treatments have side effects, but it is thought that radiotherapy isn’t as harsh as chemo, as it doesn’t effects your kidneys or liver in the same way chemo can. It is good that the chemo you have had has started to shrink the tumour already, and the plan now will be for the radiotherapy to continue this for you. Good luck x

  • can I ask if you had chemo radiology at the same time ? That’s my plan radiology every weekday and chemo every Tuesday for 6 weeks

  • Hi EllyB

My plan was 4 cycles of chemo (Mon - Wed every 3 weeks) and 33 sessions (daily Mon - Fri) of high dose radiotherapy. I started the radiotherapy on the first day of my second cycle of chemo. This was to give the first cycle the chance to start shrinking the tumour.

    Hope this helps.
