ALK+ lung cancer and brain mets

Hi everyone,

My dad was diagnosed last feb 2021 with stage 3 lung cancer with one tumour in his right lung. They did a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy concurrently for one month. After this my dads scans showed that he was stable and they’d burnt the tumour. Unfortunately past month or so my dad was having headaches followed by vomiting in the morning. He then had a seizure one day and I took him into A&E where they told us he has at least 5 tumours in the brain and his lung cancer is back.

Our oncologist has told us that dad is ALK+ and he’s been taking the drug Alectinib which is targeted therapy for ALK+ groups. He’s currently on steroids to control the inflammation in his brain. My fear is that when he comes off the steroids, he will have seizures again and perhaps be worse than last time.

The doctor hasn’t given my dad a prognosis yet until she sees his scan at the end of this month. Not sure what to expect but apparently his type of cancer is rare - only 2% of squamous people get it.

Has anyone been on Alectinib and what kind of experience have you had?

Thank you

Annie

  • Hi Annie. I’m sorry you haven’t had a reply to your post yet. I know there are people in the group on this treatment, so hopefully someone will be along soon to share their experience with you. I will bump your post to the top incase it has been missed x

    1. Hi Annie, I have been on Alectinib since 2023 after I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I seem to be coping well with little side effects. It takes a few months to get your body accustomed to the treatment. My tumors have shrunk and is stable which seems to be the best news possible.  The only issue I do have is feeling anemic,  so rest after taking alectinib. I do have regular blood tests and CT scans before getting the next batch of medication. I hope my experience is of some comfort to you.  Take care and God bless.
