Morning all!

Thank you reading this and all advice will be appreciated so much! My partners dad was diagnosed on Monday and started his chemo today. They've told him he has stage 4 progressive SCLC which is currently in his lung and liver and he chose to not be told how long he has, I'm trying to do all the research I can but I cant find any positive stories, I'm also trying to make my partner understand the severity of his diagnosis and I admire them for being so positive and strong but I am the type of person who needs to know stats and facts because if he only has a short time left I want everyone around him to do everything they can whilst he's still here so they don't wish they'd done more when he's gone. I'm worried they think he has years left when it could be months? Does anyone have any positive stories to tell? Everything I read online (which I know isn't great to do) they say the worst and the time frame is so short I also don't know how to tell my partner without being cruel.

Thank you so much for reading <3

  • Hi, the first thing you need to do is stop googling! The internet is so out dated, no wonder you can’t find any positives.

Lung cancer treatment has come so far in recent years, and there are new treatments becoming available. Immunotherapy and targeted treatments have changed the way people can live with lung cancer. There are a few of us here who have been told we are not curable, but are treatable.

Good luck to your partners dad, I wish him all the success with his treatment. Where there is treatment, there is hope x

  • Hi, My Mum has extensive SCLC, she received 6 rounds of Chemo and 6 days of Radiotherapy.  At the beginning I was like you googling the life out of any outlet I could find and there is nothing of any use.  My Mum got her life expectancy of 6 weeks without Chemo or a year with, she opted for the Chemo.  If in the right frame of mind and taking care of your well being, SCLC can respond really well to treatment.  Last week my Mum started another lot of Chemo as it still posing a problem in her liver.  We are now just weeks away for the 1yr mark and she is doing great.  She lost all her hair until she was shiny baldy and it has grew back amazingly.  Mum has it in Lung, liver, spine and Lymph.  The Lung, spine and Lymph have all been suppressed.

You need your Father in Law to take this serious, and he needs to eat well and keep active, as for your partner, well it's a hard one but they do need to realise there is a fight ahead and to keep their Dad focused on getting better and a positive attitude.

If you need  to ask anything, just shout.

    Take care xx

  • I understand you want positive stories, i was diagnosed with sclc in april 2021, unoperable and incurable i was told, i was then referred to ongologist i have had brutal treatment chemo with radiotherapy twice a day, finished aug 2021, had a scan and appointment may 2022 and tumor reduced from 2.5cm to 17mm, although not cured precious life extended.hope that helps, never give up hope

  • Hi Maxxie, How are you getting on x

  • Thankyou for your kindness in asking, it means a lot. After the high of oncologist saying trumor had shrunk  i just came.to earth and realised tumor still there and will grow again, i think personality determines.if you feel positive or not, and i am a worrier at heart.i try to be optomistic but the treatment has left me with horrible side effects, i want to be upbeat but am very depressed

  • Hi Maxxie, I can't honestly Imagine how you are coping.  My Mum is the one with SCLC and she is the one who is so upbeat and has told her oncologist, I will beat this and keeps us all on our toes. Just now though she is getting nose bleeds and a terrible cough but I am assuming this is a side effect of the Chemo.  If I can help in anyway, just shout, even if its to keep you upbeat and fighting. xx

  • Bless you for taking the time to support me, your mum sounds incredible, i did not have side effects of chemo and radiotherapy, this has come later, i have chest pain due to scarring of lungs, i think everyone has a different journey, is your mum localised sclc in one lung or has it spread, i know i am lucky i have outlived my initial prognosis, its a horrible disease, but tell your mum keep fighting, i take inspiration ftom people like your mum, lets never give.up. and love to you supporting someone is hard and you are amazing

  • Always, that's what this community is all about, whether we have it or you.  Mums SCLC has spread to her Lymph, liver and spine.  The Lung, liver and Lymph have been suppressed, it's the Liver that is posing the problem as this is very aggressive and grown in size - She has three tumors there and two are little buggers, these have grown and a lot more aggressive.  She will surprise us, she always does.  It really is such a horrible disease.  Mum is 78yrs but was fighting fit before this and still working.  She has had us decorate her house, ripping out kitchens and re-installing Stuck out tongue winking eye we are knackered but if she is happy, then that's what we must do.  Do you have family who support you

Take care and all my love T xxx

  • Hi Papz, How is your father-in -law - How are you!!
