Hello everyone

I am booked to have a lobectomy (upper right lobe) and they will be taking lymph nodes too.

I am quite anxious about the operation, the level of pain and process to recovery.  I’d be really interested to hear anyones experiences of this surgery.. how did you feel after, is the pain bearable, how long before you could do things, return to work etc etc.

Any tips to prepare or for when back home?

Thank you so much x

  • Thank you Daisychain for sharing your experience. I heard from the doctors that there is some pleural effusion in his chest. The cause is unknown yet, He is in ICU under observation and they have stopped my dad's oral intake as of now.

  • hello YinYang , I had my operation in July ,so i am now a fair bit down the line ,i had the middle lobe removed along with the lymph nodes ,i had a 18 mm nodule which was 20% cancerous but all the rest was clear ,along with the lymph nodes ,first day was the worst ,but after that i was on the up ,I had a strange reaction to the medication that everything even water tasted of salt ,I had a chest drain on for 10 days though not painful it was uncomfortable ,i managed with co codomol on a night time and during the day but once home i took them as i needed them and not every couple of hours ,i did suffer with what felt like mastitis ,in my breast ,which my surgeon explained was normal .now all these weeks on ,i do not have pain very often ,the odd stabbing pain but its only if i have done too much ,i did refrain from a few things for a few weeks ,like pushing a hoover around ,I found sneezing and coughing difficult for a few weeks as well .But at the moment everything is looking so much better ,I hope everything goes well for you ,they will look after you but dont be afraid to ask about any worrys you have no matter how small

  • Hi,  my name is Karla.   I had an upper left lobe lobectomy in September.  The staff at the hospital were really nice, as was the surgeon.   Unfortunately I experienced neuropathic pain for about 3 months. Meds didn't help but it has greatly lessened.   I was a cyclist before cancer and started to get my fitness back but then had a really bad chest infection last month.   Now back to firing on one cylinder and starting all over again.   It is dispiriting but I guess I have to accept there will be setbacks.   I hope to be able to attack those hills again on a 50 mile club ride by about May this year.

I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery.   Karla x

  • I had this surgery almost 3 years ago  the pain is manageable although the morphine made me behave out of character and it was difficult to stop the meds, but doable. Reduce your expectations of a super quick recovery and take it one day at a time. I was home in 3 days but spent a couple of weeks less than comfortably at home, but 3 weeks after I was getting back to normal.  My advice  don't be a survivor, or a living with it.  DEFIANCE worked for me and refusing to be defined by this awful disease.

  • Hi , I'm waiting for appointment with surgeon  upper right lobe to be removed I just want the cancer out , but so frightened of what's to come xx

  • I know exactly how you are feeling.  I am generally considered as a pretty feisty sort of woman. But the worry and not knowing brought me low.  So. I can only tell you the teams who carry out these surgeries are absolutely brilliant and all you need to do is trust them and also trust yourself.  You can cope and will.  You can go in petrified, but that isn't a great place to be.  DEFY it and put yourself in charge of your future.  The after pain will be there, but you will have a supply of meds to ease you on.  For me it was a lot about being good to myself and taking the time to recover in my own time.  None of us is the same.  I  still carry on defying it by playing golf 3 times a week.  We all of us know that life is unpredictable, and short.  Pack up your fears in a box and dump them elsewhere.  Meet it head on and step over it.  Good luck with your surgery, hope it goes well.  Let us know

  • Well said , i totally agree. Ive had a negative afternoon,  but you've just made me realise I'm stronger than this horrible disease . Yes, I'm feisty too , I will remember your words.  I'll let you know when I get my appointment,  hoping not long . Well done in all you have aachieved xx

  • Hi, I've recently had right upper lobectomy. I was in critical care for 24hrs after surgery.. Just needed extra help, BP kept doing o2 was low. Three weeks today was my operation. I'm still sore where the drain was. It's infected, pain is managed really well. My lung nurse keeps on touch. I sleep a lot v as feel exhausted. Improving each day. On lots of meds too help go the toilet the pregablin and oxicodone bunny you up. Get my lymph node results next week. This surgery saved my life, so well worth it. Hope all goes well fit you. X
