Diagnosis of SCLC and starting chemo

Hi all,

I’m new to the group - my dad (49) has been diagnosed with expansive SCLC, it’s spread in his lungs and two small tumours found now in his brain as well. We had the full results yesterday and he starts chemotherapy tomorrow, depending on how that goes, he may have radiotherapy to the brain. It’s a scary situation for all of us, on the outside he seems relatively ‘fine’ (eating well, a bit tired but no pain, has only lost a bit of weight), it’s difficult to comprehend what’s happening on the inside.

From everything I’ve been reading, SCLC sounds very aggressive, is anyone able to share some of their experiences or advice for someone going through this? We’ve been told it’s terminal so treatment at this point is purely a prolonging of life, any words of advice for those in similar situations would be very helpful.

Thank you x

  • Hi Eleni, My Mum has extensive SCLC, and was given 6 weeks without Chemo.  Mum took the chemo and has responded very well to it.  We are 7 months on and she seems to be doing good.  Mum had mets to Liver, lymph, Adrenal and spine.

SCLC, albeit it is aggressive, tends to respond well to treatment and your Dad is a young man, so this could be in his favour, he needs to look after himself and eat well and drink plenty ( water lol).

My Mum (78) has had 6 rounds of Chemo and 6 days of radiotherapy, treatment ended end of Nov, today is scan day, to see if it has stabilised it for the time being, it will return but they have stated they will try treating again as long as they catch on time.

At this point all you can do is love and care for him and make as many memories as you can. Stay strong. xx

  • Hi Toppy,

Thanks so much for your response, I really appreciate it. It brings some comfort to know there’s others out there going through the same. Your mum sounds like a super strong lady and really hoping you get some good news from her scan today. Thanks again xx

  • My Mum got good news - Cancer gone from lymph nodes, one of the lumps on lung gone, other stayed the same, spine has turned white which means it healed and almost gone, liver still a sticky point but overall amazing news. She is a power house.

  • Great news !!! So glad x

    Good morning lovely people.

2nd CT scan on 17 April this tear (R upper lobectomy Dec. 2022) recent scan has shown my middle lobe is compressed. Having bronchial lavage on the 23rd May. Letter to GP from consultant described it as possible middle lobe syndrome,  GP unsure what this is. Regular chest infections but one in December this year & a few weeks ago really floored me. Throat is quite raw & my voice is quite hoarse. Anyone able to suggest any ideas on what's going on with me ?

  • That is AMAZING! She  truly is a powerhouse, so so happy for you and this brings hope to all of us so please do share regular updates on her progress Blush

  • Hi Eleni, if you read my profile, you can see her progress to date.  Hope this helps you as it is such a worrying time.  She really has responded so well to all treatment but I think her personality and attitude towards this has a great impact on her wellbeing.  We have never allowed her to dwell on it and always encourage her to fight. xx  Please tell your Dad to fight this with all his might, we know it's not curable but it gives him more time to spend as he should be doing.

Please keep me posted on how he gets on.

All my love you and your Dad xx

  • Thank you, I’ll have a look through. Completely agree that the attitude to it can have such a big impact, we’re all determined to help him fight it as much as possible, all fingers crossed for him starting treatment tomorrow!

    Thank you again xx

  • Hi Eleni  Let me know how he gets on. xx

  • Hi Toppy,

He just finished his first session, seems to be doing well for now. He said he was just bored and hungry! I know side effects will tend to kick in a week or so, we’ll see how he gets on but glad that he’s not had any immediate reactions for now, will keep you posted how he progresses over the next week xx

  • Glad he’s doing ok !!! Just feed him up !!!
    take care
