Brain Radiotherapy

Hi

Can anyone tell me how they dealt with radiotherapy to the brain? My Dad had 5 sessions mid December and his fatigue is quite bad at the moment with a lack of appetite. He’s also had 2 cycles of CAV chemo since then and another 2 lined up but at the moment he is on antibiotics for a chest infection, so his 3rd cycle has been delayed a week. He also has trouble with some foods going straight through him too, he currently weighs 8 stone!

Thank you

  • Closest I get to that is a brain tumour surgically removed from parietal lobe then the bed irradiated to burn out the last bits. So my experience may not be relevant?

Whatever, I was told to expect 6 months to get over it. Yeah, right, and the rest... took me way longer. You know how it is when you have something to say and it's on the tip of your tongue but it escapes you until it's too late? Happens once in a blue moon to most of us. Imagine that happening to you every couple of minutes or so, without a break. That's how it was for me at first. Massively frustrating, can't tell anyone anything. It gets better over time, of course. So cut your Dad some slack. Scratch that - cut him LOTS of slack.

Digestion. Yeah, still an issue for me. I'm now a very fussy eater, avoiding what no longer agrees with me. Your Dad can't go on losing weight, of course. The doctors will probably recommend Fortisip - not the greatest drink in the world. I get on OK with plain Complan (shop around, prices vary a lot) or a couple of eggs whipped into a large mug of milk (warmed up in microwave). Liquids are important if he gets the runs - dehydration can be a risk.

    Kind regards,
    Steve
