Hi all,

I feel like I post here all the time, I do apologise.

My Dad is day 16 after chemo (Carboplatin and Etoposide) and immunotherapy (Atezolizumab). His temperature was a little raised last night, just over 38 degrees but as the morning went on it was coming down. My Mum called the Oncology unit, they were going to get him to go to A&E but they said they would call back in 30 mins. His temperature continued to regulate and come down, we checked it again at 4:30pm and it was 36.2 degrees and has been similar all day. The Oncology unit were happy it was continuing to regulate and said if he seems well in himself, then they were happy for someone to not have to take him to A&E.

Has this happened to anyone before during their treatment and it’s not been a cause for concern for infection? His next treatment session is Tuesday next week.

Thank you

  • Hi , sorry didn’t message sooner, tend to stay of unless I get an alert

this happened to my mum bk in June after her 1st round of chemo it was day 10 after . Treatment,  she went in to A&e , and was given antibiotics through vein and was in hospital for 6 days,

Mum had her 4 th  round of chemo 10 days ago , she is on the same meds as your dad immunotherapy and chemo every  21 days ,

Day 10 -14 after the treatment your immune system is at its lowest your white blood cells , so no one sees my mum on them days, as no way are we going through what happens with the infection when her temp was raised,

hope your dad is ok xx  and glad the oncologist say that he don’t need to go in,

please let us know how he gets on

  • Hi Nicole,

    Thank you for your reply.

It seems to be he’s warmer in the mornings and his body temperature regulates itself back to normal throughout they day. The Oncology ward were happy that his temperature comes down, the only thing I can think of is maybe he over heats a bit in bed, as he’s wearing pyjamas at the moment where he’s lost body weight and then once he’s up and about and showered, his temperature comes down. He’s fine in himself and yesterday he said he felt quite good.

I just worry that we will get to Tuesday, his next cycle and his bloods will be up the wall and chemo and immunotherapy will be delayed.

    Thank you

  • Hi Lucie,

I am sure your dad is ok, they would of said to go in ASAP, the warning signs for my mum was a high temp, 38 and she was sat on the sofa and her hands were shaking and her feet and she was shivering saying she felt really cold,

they let her out on the Thursday and they sent nurses to the house to give her the anti biotics / and she still went and had her treatment on the Wednesday,,

im sorry your dad has lost weight My mum has to and she is eating more now than she has ever eating in her life, June my  mum Started treatment & 10 days ago was the 4th round of chemo and immunotherapy, when she goes it will just be for immunotherapy, so hoping she might start to put weight back on,

X x x hope your dads treatment goes ok next week for him x

    love Nicole x

  • Hi,

I said to my Mum they wouldn’t kick around with him with regards to needing antibiotics at the moment, so if they thought he had an infection they would have sent him to A&E. I’m surprised though, as vulnerable as they are from an immune system point of view, they would still have to go via A&E.

How did your Mum find the treatment? Did she have any side effects?

He has had an appetite, which is good but I don’t think he will put any weight on until his chemo has finished, and like you say, the immunotherapy continues.

Do you mind if I ask what type of cancer your Mum has?

    Wishing her well x

  • Hi Lucie,

so if for any chance anyone having treatment goes to A&E they fast track you straight away and keep you in a room on your own, no Messing about,

so my mum had adrenocarcina small In her left lung a small growth but there is spotting on her adrenal gland. And spotting on her rib,

the only problem my mum Had was that infection after the first round ,

and the constant tiredness 4 days after treatment which lasts about 5 days ,

After my mum had her infection she made a real Good effort to drink and eat so much more, my mum still has her hair,

but she has lost about a stone she is 7st 7

shw gets constant  hot flushes in the night and can not sleep much,

how about your dad how is he finding it ?

    how are you coping xx

my life has stopped to be honest xxxx

  • Nicole,

Well, we had an incident with A&E about 3 weeks ago, his sodium levels were abnormal so they wanted him to go to A&E immediately as this was 4 days before his first cycle. He ended up sitting in A&E for 4.5hrs, even though we were told by his lung nurse a bed was ready.

My Dad has Small Cell, with shadows on his spine and liver.

Your Mum sounds very similar to my Dad with regards to symptoms after, he had to stay in after his treatment for 8 days as his liver went up the wall but it’s his Sodiun that was causing the problem and he had a slight lung infection. The tiredness hit him after about day 4 also.

My Dad has struggled, but he has tried to get a bit of exercise in this week, by that I mean just a bit of walking and fresh air. He has an appetite, although eating little and often. He doesn’t sleep all night either, gets a solid 3hrs and then up for 2hrs, back to sleep for a couple of hours, so it’s all broken sleep during the night, and yes, a few hot flushes.

I’d devastated and it’s so hard seeing him go though that, he’s very emotional and has been very negative at times but he seems to be becoming more positive now. It’s very hard isn’t it and it just turns your life upside down. I have 2 children and a third on the way, so just trying to juggle life at the moment.

I hope you are doing as well as can be.

  • This is terriable he was sat waiting, ours is the opposite to your dad my mum was raised through and then put on a ward with peopel with stomach bugs , I kept calling them and saying this isn’t allowed she is having chemo they didn’t listen, makes me angry,

im So sorry about your dads diagnosis, any cancer diagnosis is gut wrenching,  but as soon as someone asked me about my mums cancer you see there face drop,

but there are lots of positive stores on here or treatments that are helping and people living with lung cancer and being treatment for many years,

my dad passed away suddenly 20 years ago he was 46,  it was a blood clot,   But going through this is so much harder than when my dad passed,

the thing I find hard, is not being able to see my mum is anyone in my house is poorly, or if you get a notification on your phone to isolate due to covid/

everyone says make special memories, but I never took my mum for granted anyway , I always tell my mum I love her always sending her messages thanking her for all she has done for us, my mum would help with my 5 year old daughter and both me and her daddy work full time on the railway  in Hertfordshire,  so my mum is always in my life, she would come to my house before I go work and be there when I get home, but how can you make these so called memories when there immune system is low/ they are shattered from treatment and you worry if you take them out or go anywhere they might get a cold a cough or covid of a stranger even if you are careful,

I think haveing children keeps you busy and that’s amazing you have a baby on the way when are u due ?

today is 10 days since her last treatment so can’t see her as immune system very low, so we won’t risk seeing her for 4 days,  as you know what kids are like the Number 1 spreaders of stuff,  but I’m hoping now this is the last round of chemo that when she continues the immunotherapy that we won’t have to worry about this few days when the immune system is low,

so my mums cancer is non small cell

And the treatment is 2 types of chemo and 1 x immunotherapy every 21 days,

I think this is what your dad is having xx

how is your mum coping ? X

I stay awake at night and my mind over thinks ,  will life ever be some Type of normal every again ??  Im

broke and not the same person I was in April before this, xxxx

  • This forum has been great, lots of positive stories but also sad stories. Also sorry to hear about your Dad.

It is tricky with children, we are going through so many Covid LFT it’s unreal.

My Mum is OK, it’s a lot to deal with isn’t it, she’s like a nurse at home at the moment but she’s doing well.

You can’t switch off can you, I just try and take one day at a time

    xx
