Dad’s Oncology Appointment Today

Hi all,

Feeling very emotional/worried this morning. My Dad had his diagnosis this week of SCLC with it also on his Liver and Spine.

He is seeing the Oncologist this morning with plans to start chemotherapy next week. I am petrified how he will respond to chemotherapy, infections, symptoms etc and will the cancer respond to treatment.

Today we will know more about other treatments (I’m assuming) that he may be offered, if any, I have asked my Mum to ask about genetic testing, he has a lot of cancer on his side of the family.

I have been reading through posts of SCLC for days, some positive and some not so positive. I keep thinking to myself that he hasn’t lost any weight, not dramatically, he is still eating, occasional walks, only for 20 minutes or so and the Lung Specialist was really pleased with how well he looked on Monday, I’m taking those as positives.

If anyone could cheer me up today with some positivity or anyone who has experienced Stage 4 SCLC and treatment, please say hi. I’m worried sick today. I’m scared of the Oncologist saying today “if chemo doesn’t work, we can’t do anything else”.

Thank you x

Edit: So he’s had the appointment, they are going to do 4 sessions of chemotherapy, to start next and also start him on immunotherapy. He is very tearful today.

  • Hi Essex1 sorry I didn't get to you in time before your Dad's appointment. Bless his heart, I am not surprised he is emotional, it is such a build up with all the tests and scans to get to this point, at least he knows now what is what. It may actually be a little relief for him, as he knows he will be having treatment. But I can imagine that is a scary thought for you all now. It looks like he has a good treatment plan. Immunotherapy is the magic drug for many. There are several people here on immunotherapy, and some that have finished the treatment and have managed to remain stable.

Everyone has different reactions and side effects to chemotherapy, but your Dad's team will work very closely with your Dad to make sure he managing the side effects as well as possible. The immunotherapy has less side effects, and is much easier on the body.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear today about your Dad, but this is good news, the treatment can start and get your Dad on the way to shrinking this disease. xx

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply. Feeling so emotional today, my Dad is so down and looks so fearful, it’s heartbreaking to see.

Just had to drop him off at hospital as his sodium levels are a bit all over the place, so they want to put him on fluids so he’s ready for chemo on Thursday. I think it could be from the steroid pills he’s on.

I just want him to try and keep positive, he has a chance to fight this!
