Hi All,
My dad is 75 years old and has been diagnosed with stage IV Esophageal cancer (with liver mets). He has just started chemo two weeks ago (1st round). He appeared generally well until starting chemo and now he is basically bedbound 22 out of 24 hrs sleeping, hardly eating/drinking etc. Is this normal ? Or is it more likely the cancer advancing? He is in Cisplatin and fleurons??
Any help appreciated ?? It seems so extreme....
Hi ,
Sorry to hear about your dad . The platinum based drugs are big hitters . If he was well two weeks ago and suddenly incapacitated after two weeks on chemo I would be looking to speak to his oncologist about getting him reevaluate just to see if they can strike a better balance with his dose . My mum had a different chemo but platinum based . The difference when she came off it was amazing and often we could not be sure if it was cancer advancement or chemo side effects . It turned out to be the latter. She had it for a second year but with a dose reduction and this made the world of difference to her quality of life . She tolerated it much better at a slightly lower dose .
My own school of thought is today matters as much as some future tomorrow so I wanted her to get the best out of her present circumstances. They are very responsive at the oncology department but getting a balance is good . I did however stipulated that she wanted to stay on chemo but at a reduced dose .
take care ,
