Hello
My mum had breast cancer 5 years ago. She had two operations to remove the cancer followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment and got the all clear 9 months later. Since then we have tried to live our lives to the full and be as positive as possible. While my mum was undergoing treatment for breast cancer she very sadly lost her sister to cancer.
My mum has had pain in the right side of her stomach for some months now. She initially thought it was a pulled muscle but has been back to the doctors several times. Her doctor did lots of tests one of which being a test for Ovarian cancer. My mums CA125 came back high which was concerning and she got refereed for a ultrasound scan. Due to my mums history she paid for a private scan and was told that she has a fibroid and cyst on her ovaries. We were so relieved after suspecting Ovarian cancer and were advised to attend the NHS ultrasound in two weeks time so that the doctors could determine how quickly the cyst and fibroid were growing. My mum has been in a lot of pain but we were relieved thinking it was caused by the cyst and fibroid. My mum attended her appointment on Tuesday and then very unexpectedly got a call from her doctor yesterday asking her to attend an urgent appointment.
The doctor explained that they have unfortunately found nodules on my mums liver that is very likely to be liver cancer and have referred her for a full CT scan on Sunday.
We are all in complete shock. We have gone from worrying about Ovarian cancer, to being completely relieved to now being even more worried as she has Liver cancer. I feel numb and don’t know how to feel. I want to be strong for my mum and understand we need further tests before knowing her treatment plan and outcome. Having gone through treatment with her before it somehow feels so much harder to be positive the second time. I feel really angry but I know that wont help and I also know there is no one to blame. I just feel so heartbroken for my mum and so scared of what’s to come.
I need to stay strong for my mum but right now I am a complete mess and feel so anxious and worried about the future. I usually find comfort in educating myself and googling all about the treatment and options available but with Liver cancer it’s made me feel even worse.
Hi Olive45 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
It must have been such a shock for you all to discover that your mum may now have liver cancer and I'm hoping that you may know if this is what you're dealing with after her scan last Sunday.
If the scan does reveal liver cancer, then I'm sure the members of this group will try and help answering any questions that you have and sharing their experiences with you.
As you know the online community is divided up into different support groups, so I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join and post in the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions with others who have a loved one dealing with cancer.
If this is something that you'd like to do clicking on the link I've created will take you there where you can then join and post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you feel ready, it would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Sending a virtual (((hug)))
