Liver resection recovery

I know I’m jumping the gun as I’ve only just been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer. If I am lucky enough to have surgery, I was wondering roughly how long the recovery takes?I have two dogs and am really worried that I won’t be able to look after them. When I had my bowel resection I was driving and walking quite quickly.

  • Hi

I can't help with your question but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also post this question in the bowel cancer group and also consider joining and posting in the secondary liver cancer group.

Have you been assigned a CNS (cancer nurse specialist), sometimes known as a keyworker, as she should be able to give you an idea on the likely recovery period?

    Wishing you all the best

  • Thank you so much for your response. I didn’t know there was a secondary liver group. I had my MRI today and have my pet scan on Monday. It’s all getting a bit too real now.

  • Hi Jools

Just had a liver resection last week - 6 days ago, following a bowel resection early last year.  I had laparoscopic  surgery this time and I was able to walk out of the hospital on day 5 (albeit slowly!).  Not up to walking to the shops yet but I suspect that I will be making the 15-20mins walk by the end of this week - after 10 days.  If you are are fairly fit and healthy, which I suspect you are, I am guessing your mobility will be very similar.  Open surgery on the Liver may take a little longer.  Hope this is helpful?

  • Wow! Thanks for your response and congratulations to you on your remarkable recovery so far. I am fit, healthy and very determined, so hope I can report back later that I skipped out of the hospital! Okay, so maybe that’s a bit optimistic, but I’ll certainly do my best.
