Hello,
I have just had a phone call from my mom telling me that my dad has primary liver cancer.
The whole family is in bits currently, but I am concerned by the time is has taken to diagnose and whether the longer it is left, the worse the outcome.
This is my first dealing with cancer, so know very little about what happens next. Looks like we will get a consultation in the next few weeks.
Should I be pushing for an appointment earlier than this? I don't want it be unreasonable but so scared that the delays result in a worse outcome.
It has taken best part of 6 months to get the diagnosis, and 2 liver biopsies to finally work out what was happening. Strange part is my dad seems fine.
Thanks
Hi and welcome to the Online Community. I'm so sorry to read of your Dad's diagnosis and I can fully understand that you're all extremely worried at the moment but rest assured your Dad's team will be doing everything they can as quickly as they can to get a treatment plan in place for him.
I myself have a different type of cancer but I can well remember how I felt when I was told my diagnosis, I was in bits - & also felt fine in myself! You've joined our Liver cancer group and I'm sure someone will be along soon to chat and offer support.
I'm attaching a link to some reading material that you may find helpful Liver cancer. You might find jotting down some questions for the consultant an idea.

Many thanks for your reply @MrsBJH. Sorry to hear that you also have cancer. It's devastating for all parties.
I have read the forum and it's been helpful, but are there any questions you wish that you had asked the consultant that you missed at the time?
We are due to see him on Saturday and my parents will be relying on me to ask all the right stuff without getting caught up in the emotion of it all.
Any pointers would be amazing.
Kind Regards
Rich
Hi Rich.
TBH I found my consultant so thorough he pre-empted most of my questions. At the same time I was given a Macmillan booklet which almost became my go-to bible! I took a notebook and pen, noted down lots of things then called my CNS if I needed further help. You could always ask the Consultant's permission to record the meeting, most of them are happy for you to do so.
The one question we all want to ask and they don't have the answers to is "Will it come back? Thankfully cancer is defined more nowadays as a treatable disease. I'm to all intents and purposes cancer-free and have been for 10 months but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't come back to haunt me on a frequent basis.
Sending all the best for Saturday, B xx
