  1. Hi All, I got so much support on here last time , my mum got diagnosed with primary bowel and secondary liver cancer Xmas 2016 she was 66, she had bowel op followed by chemo then a liver resection taking 66% of her liver away , they couldn’t get 2 little spots on other side but happy how the op went . She’s been well and all scan clear until Xmas eve , latest ct showed it’s back 2 tumours in old part of liver , awaiting PET and MRI scans for clearer picture, they’ve said chemo is the next step , I wondered had anyone else had it come back , 1 of the 2 spots it to near an artery to operate again . I remember hearing about targeted radiation, has anyone had this ? Many thanks for reading , all info gratefully received. D

Hello..sorry to hear that your mums cancer has come back..I have primary liver cancer and have had 2 liver resections. Have they said how big the spots are? I had RFA on a couple of liver lesions but they need to be below a certain size before they will agree to  ablate them..It was successful as they havent returned and it's been almost 5 years now.

I have never had chemo so can't comment on that.

Let me know if you have any more questions and I will be happy to answer them if I can.

  • Hi essgirl

thanks for your reply , at the moment they have only seen them on her 6 month routine CT scan so not said size, she’s got a mri on 7th jan and we are waiting for date of PET scan , then they said they’ll talk with Addenbrooks ( who performed her liver rescection ) to see best treatment plan .
so pleased you’ve been clear 5 years , how big were your tumours ? And was they’re many side affects to the treatment?

Addenbrookes did one of my resections and also did my ablation.i think the ones they ablated were less than 3cms...my original tumour was 20 cms..I had some pain afterwards but nothing debilitating. The ablation is done usually with just an overnight stay.

May be worth asking about it, obviously depending on the size and number of lesions.

  • We are based in Norwich but as Addenbrooks is a liver specialist mum was there for op and chemo at Norwich . Are you close to Addenbrooks? Do u mind if I ask how old you are ? Thanks

  • Glad you got the proper diagnosis there , the care mum had was amazing there. It’s been 2 1/2 years after mums first resection , how long was it before yours came back ? Thanks and happy new year

First reoccurance was 2 years, then next reoccurance was 2.5 years then 18 months ..the type of cancer I have has a very high reoccurance rate though.

I had HCC in 2013. Had 60% of my liver removed.  Had 2 new tumours in remaining 40% of liver in 2016 which were removed surgically too.

There was vascular invasion so I wasn't surprised that a tumour appeared in 2018. Then 2 more appeared. I had TACE but tumours too small to deal with.

After my 3-monthly MRI in October,  it was discovered that the cancer had spread outside of my liver.

I'm currently on Nexavar tablets. Started on 2 a day but reduced to 1 a day due to side effects.

I'm so low at the moment. It's the not knowing what's going on that I can't deal with.

  • Hi I’ve been off this whilst mum has started chemo , her main tumour was around 5 cm I think as back in jan , they said as it’s right between the two main arteries it’s to dangerous to operate or do ablation, she’s had 3 months chemo So far but stopped now and booked emergency ct scan as her bilirubin levels too high 55, and effecting her liver , worried how this will effect her liver . So we will see what scan shows. Hope you are well
