Hi all, I don’t know where to start I need some support, I have just recently lost my mum to lung cancer she was only given 3 months in June and passed away on 1/9/25 the same we my dad also got diagnosed with HCC liver cancer and lymph nodes and prognosis was 6 months without treatment and 9 with, he can only have chemotherapy due to immunotherapy not been suitable for him he has had 4 rounds of GEM and CiST has been generally ok and doing well other than tiredness no nausea or poor appetite he’s eating good and looking after himself. He’s having 2 weeks chemotherapy on and 1 off, so I got a call from him Tuesday this week saying he’s booked himself a holiday to EGYPT on his own with no insurance I was absolutely gob smacked!!!!, I am going on holiday for 2 weeks on a cruise so won’t get good cover on phone as with be at sea. I explained what if he’s poorly what if he falls etc, but he’s risking it going I’ve been worried silly he keeps saying he wants the sun and relax. Tonight he rang me to say he has got swelling to his ankles and legs and I’ve noticed for a couple of weeks puffiness in his face so he showed me and it’s bad oedema I’m concerned as he flys Sunday this week on a 4 he flight. I told him to put some compression stockings on and elevate his legs I’m so worried regarding him flying and taking I’ll on holiday. I think he think he hasn’t got long left and feels fed up and what is the point. Sorry for the rant
Hi Kat334
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm so sorry to read that you lost your mum to cancer recently and that your dad is now dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again, and hopefully others who have experience with the symptoms your dad is showing will pop on to share their experience with you.
When you posted you said that your dad had booked himself a holiday and not taken out travel insurance and that you were "concerned as he flys Sunday this week". I assume that this is today, so unfortunately probably too late to sort out travel insurance for him. Hopefully he'll be okay while on holiday but for future holidays it might be an idea for you to join us over in the travel insurance for cancer patients group where you'll find lots of recommendations for travel insurance companies that will provide cover.
I hope you're able to have a relaxing cruise, although I can understand that you're likely to spend a fair amount of time worrying about your dad.
Sending virtual ((hugs))
I looked into insurance for him for the week and was £4500 the holiday was £800x and my dads insurance company wouldn’t insure him thanks for reply
Unfortunately it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you have cancer. Did you try any of those recommended in the group I signposted you to?
I know it's too late now, as you dad's already gone on holiday, but in future I'd recommend that he makes sure he can get insurance before he books his trip. He might have to pay more than he wants to but it could costs 10s of thousands of pounds if he was taken ill abroad and had to be medivaced back to the UK.
I've had cancer twice and companies I've used include payingtoomuch.com and goodtogoinsurance.com.
I hope he has a good holiday and you enjoy your cruise.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
