Hello, this is my first post. My mum was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. The tumour is too large to be removed. It also blocking her bile duct which has resulted in lots of symptoms including itching, weight loss, nausea. She has been in hospital the last 10 days and had a system of drains fitted to re-route the bile so it is not building up inside her. We hope this will relieve some of her symptoms but have been warned she will be prone to infection. Does anyone have similar experience of this at all? Thank you.
Hi,
Sort of, yeah. My Mum has liver cancer which is also too large to be removed, at first she had a lot of problems with diahorrea and nausea and they wondered if the bile duct was involved. She has lost a lot of weight and was prescribed weight gain shakes which helped a bit. My Mum hasn't had any drains fitted but is on a lot of drugs to try to regulate her digestion, sleep, etc. At the moment she's in hospital with an infection but they aren't sure where it is within the body, she is responding to antibiotics though. She has fluid on her lungs and in her abdomen (ascites) which needs draining before they can discharge her, apparently one of those might be the site of infection. It's all very aggravating because so much seems to go wrong with basic bodily functions with liver cancer, as well as the fact that the cancer itself needs to be treated.
Not sure all this is much help, I wish your Mum the best!

Hi Rachel,
I'm sorry to hear your mum is also poorly. My mum has just come out of hospital after 11 days at the Royal Free. It's so lovely to have her home although she is still very weak and tired. She has got to go back in to hospital for in a couple of weeks time for the final part of the op with the drains etc.. and hopefully after that she can start chemo. I agree there seems to be so many different symptoms with liver cancer as I guess the liver has so many functions which we just take for granted when it is working properly. My mum has also lost a lot of weight and as soon as she eats anything feels really nauseous and has stomach pains but has not been prescribed any shakes as yet although I'm not sure she'd manage them. I really hope your mum's infection is sorted soon and she can come home. Will she be having any other treatment?
Nikki
Hi Nikki,
How's your Mum doing? Sorry I haven't replied - things have gone a bit crazy here. They couldn't get on top of the infection and fluid build up and then Mum's liver started to fail so 2 days ago she went terminal, we're waiting until they can discharge her for hospice at home. She's really gone downhill physically and is very frail, in pain and sometimes confused. I've been washing her and helping her go to the toilet which is mental but she prefers that to the nurses doing it. Hope things are more positive at your end!
Best
Rachel
Hi Nicky, i have seen your post and was just wondering if your mum made a recovery? I am going through the same thing with my dad at the moment and he has a 3.8cm tumour on his liver blocking a bile duct. I have already lost my mum to stomach cancer and in my early thirties so very scared right now. Was wondering if you can offer any advice with your experience x
