Traumatic experiences

Hi,

i’m the son of a Liver Cancer patient. My mum has been extremely unwell due to the cancer and treatment that she is receiving. She has been on immunotherapy for 9 weeks and has had three treatments. Her third treatment was on Wednesday the 14th and she was rushed into hospital on the following Saturday.

she is currently in hospital because she begun having nose bleeds which just wouldn’t stop. In one day she lost about two litres of blood. She had to have balloons put into her nose and given clotting agents as well as a blood transfusion.

since having the life saving treatment, she’s become dazed, confused, forgetful and just all round overwhelmed by noise and busy places.

I’m not sure if this is because of the cancer, the treatment or because she had such a traumatic experience and nearly died from blood loss.

Has anyone else experienced the mental symptoms described above that may be related to the treatment or the cancer itself? Or do people think maybe it’s some kind of PTSD symptom?

My family are worried for my mothers health… and so am I.

  • Hello M

Am so sorry to see that your Mum has been so unwell due to her cancer and immunotherapy treatments. It must be so worrying for you all and distressing to see Mum in this situation.

Has Mum got a CNS that you can talk to, or even her GP? I called my CNS team many times during my treatments and they were always happy to answer questions and offer support.

It sounds really traumatic, the nose bleed, treatment and blood transfusion.

We are not medical experts on here and can really only speak about our own experiences or sign post people to the right help but you say Mum has become dazed/confused/forgetful/overwhelmed and this is something that needs talking about if only for some reassurance.

Her CNS should be able to tell you whether this is possibly an expected side effect from the treatment or whether as you suggest due to the trauma and if they do not know they will be able to refer her to her doctor to be checked.

I am sorry that as a family you are going through this with Mum and I hope that you are able to get a bit of reassurance and support for her.

If there is anything else please do ask. If you feel speaking to someone at any point would help, the support line number is at the bottom of this and they are lovely on there.

    Jane
