Hi everyone

I’m a caregiver of my father who was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer last November 2021.

So we moved to UK to start treatment journey.

When we came here, we hoped the objective of the treatment would be curable instead of just controlling the disease because my dad was healthy no other medical history except Hep B and was on antiviral and not alcoholic.

However, number of tumors were three; two small tumors in the liver and the biggest almost 7 c/m and extended involving the inferior vena cava as tumor thrombus to the heart (right atrium) and all the way down portal vein.

we hoped they would try TACE or SIRT but the team decided it’s advanced and risky and started him on immunotherapy (Atezozoliumab + Bevacizumab).

He’s being treated at the Royal Marsden till now done with 6 cycles.

Two weeks ago he was so tired feeling sick no appetite and fever so he was admitted (that’s another long story) finally after arguing with them and given a diagnosis of infection probably abdominal because his body started to accumulate fluids in his tummy and legs and his fever was like every 6 hours on and off.

Despite, all the blood works and x ray, no source of infection was found.

After the antibiotics he started to get slightly improved so continue to the 6th Cycle, however they decided to do a CT scan just to confirm this.

The CT scan results were not confirming an infection but it was quite shock for me and no one really discussed it with me or my father at that time.

So after discharge I insisted that this should be discussed and finally one of the team called me and told me the purpose of that scan is not to follow the treatment!! But for the infection suspected and although it says clearly that the big tumor has grown even bigger and involves more of portal veins, he said the disease is still controlled!!

So I’m really worried and start to go for a second opinion.

any other thoughts?! Please do share your experience.

Thanks

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is an informative and supportive place to be.

I don't have any experience with liver cancer but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily seen.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Let us know how the second opinion goes.
