My friend has been diagnosed with the two cancers above and I just don't know how to best support him. He is awaiting start of treatments - chemo along with radio but he lives on his own, I have MS and work and am trying to be there but I feel torn in many pieces.  This is not about me it is about him and how I can help him the best way possible.

Any advice would be appreciated and as he has severe anxiety and other mental health issues it is so hard for him now worrying about his diagnosis.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your friend has recently been diagnosed with two types of cancer and I know what an incredibly difficult time this will be for you both.

As you know, the online community is divided up into different support group so I hope you don't mind me suggesting a couple more for you to join. The first is the head and neck cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around treatment for these types of cancer, and the second is the family and friends group, where you can chat to others about how they've supported someone living with cancer.

If you'd like to join these groups just click on the links I've created which will take you to them. You can then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here and also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could pop something about your friend's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
