My hubby has stage 2 in vocal chords, has had one operation, 2nd one now cancelled due to covid-19!! However, after follow-up with surgeon and a nasendoscopy, he has developed bad bouts of hiccups, which are starting to become relentless. Its affecting sleep etc, and so has been put on gabapentin-still waiting to see if it works. Has anyone else suffered from this???

  • Hi Alli, i personally have not come across this so sadly cannot offer any advice, if you re-post in the Head and Neck group there might be some knowledgeable people there who can help. Hope you get some answers, all the best, take care.

Thankyou! He has been given some meds, which seem to be working thankfully.

  • Hi Alli123, thats lovely to here as its bad enough just having hiccups when we are well. did they say what could be causing it or is it just one of the side effects. All the best for a full recovery, take care.

They think it was caused by nerve damage during his last operation, so not sure whether it will be temporary (hopefully for his sake), or permanent.

But now struggling to get some clarification on social distancing. I am a frontline nurse during covid, but unsure as to how vulnerable hubby is, as he is technically not immunosuppressed, but still at risk. Getting so many conflicting opinions from docs etc. Not sure whether to move out for his protection???

    Thanks

    Allison

  • Lets hope it is temporary and fixes itself as often the nerves will repair themselves, maybe if one of you live upstairs and the other downstairs and not sharing towels etc avoiding any physical contact. If you think its not worth risking and he can look after himself reasonably well and you have an option to move out then it give it a try. I understand where you are coming from as I had a laryngectomy 10 years ago so breathe through my neck and my wife works in a daycare centre for adults with special needs so we wondered how vulnerable I would be. Although the centre has closed due to the virus she has been moved to another place where carers are needed. As you say its hard to know what to do for the best as your job is so important at the moment and very much in need doing a great job to look after the patients. Thanks.
