Hi all
I had 35 RT and 2 chemo, finishing in late March 2016 after being diagnosed with Larynx Cancer ( Squamous) Fellow sufferers will know that this is not the easiest of treatments. However, I am 76 yrs of age and still here. I now have hospital check up 5-6 monthly and so fr all is good.
My taste is about 85% recovered. I still have saliva problems. I cannot take very warm food or liquid and my tongue is very sensitive to spices. As a curry lover, this has been a bad problem. However I can now just about manage a very mild curry. I have two outstanding problems. One is that my stomach seems to have shrunk and I can only eat small amounts at a time. If you imagine a piece of medium sized battered Cod from the chippy, I can just about manage that but certainly NOT the chips. I find I need sloshy food and I have a cup of tea with nearly every meal. This is a problem if eating out, so I have stopped doing so, almost completely. There is also the quantity problem if you eat out. I can seldom eat more than half of what they provided and I get fed up with being asked if there is a problem.
I know I may be no different from the rest of you,but I thought I would ask as I would hate to find there is a magic cure out there that I don't know of! Any help gratefully accepted.
Johnnymac
Hi Johnnymac , well done in getting through the treatment , despite the not so easy bits , and at 76 is very impressive as well I will use this when I answer other post for the older patients. You should find your taste buds will return but a change in taste can happen where you find food you liked before does not not taste as good , and visa versa. Your stomach will shrink as it is /was not being used as much , im not sure but I suppose if you gradually increase your intake the stomach will increase . Yes swallowing dryish food can cause problems so I used to have my food with sauces ,gravies etc to help , this might also improve with time . Im still searching for that magic cure Johnny after 10 years , all the best ,
Chris.
Thanks Chris
I didn't really think there was a magic cure but it was worth asking. I am trying eating little but often at the moment, to see if I can increase my stomach capacity.
Isn't it crazy - the amount of people spending fortunes to decrease their intake and I have the cure!!!
