Confirmed renal kidney cancer waiting for ct results and grading to see if it has spread

Hi

My partner was diagnosed with renal kidney cancer 5 weeks ago after urgent scans were requested by his consultant following an ultrasound which found ‘3.5cm lesion ‘ on his left kidney.

It took a lot of chasing and dozens of calls to get these results and arrange a subsequent ct on his chest. We get the results on September 5th.
He is short of breath and in acute pain in his side especially after eating and has a noticeable swelling on his left side.
We are both struggling waiting and although we only have a week until we find out it would be good to hear of anyone with similar symptoms and any advice would be helpful.
He seems determined that it has spread and is expecting bad news.

  • Hello Jbt75

I'm sorry to read your post, and that you and your husband are waiting for news. I can understand how worried you must be.

Although I have kidney cancer, I did not have any symptoms, and it was a shock to be told I had a tumour. I can't really advise you about your husband's symptoms, or whether they are from the kidney or not. What I can say, which I hope is reassuring, is that most kidney cancers are slow-growing, and most are treatable, if not curable.

Other people may post who have had similar symptoms to your husband's.

You do not have long to wait before you get more information, and a treatment plan. Most people find that their anxiety lessens once they know exactly what they are dealing with, and the treatment is put in place. Hopefully, you will be given a named specialist nurse, who you can contact if you have any worries.

This is the hardest time, waiting for things to happen. I know it is very difficult, but try not to worry. It doesn't affect the outcome, and can make you feel more upset. Try to distract yourselves with activities that will take your mind off things. If your husband can manage it, gentle exercise or walking is good.

If his pain gets worse, do contact your GP for advice and medication. Don't leave it until you see the oncologist!

I hope you get reassuring news on the 5th September.

    Stay strong

    Candysmum

  • Thanks for your reply.

Hopefully you are doing ok. It’s difficult but we are trying to do bits and pieces in the mean time.
As you say, hopefully once we have the results we can move forwards.
