Good evening everyone, this is my first post in this forum. We received the unexpected news this afternoon that my husband has kidney cancer.
About 6 weeks ago he had blood in his urine, GP diagnosed UTI, didn't clear up so was referred for a cystoscopy. The cystoscopy showed a small bladder cancer which was removed with a TURBT a month ago. Today we went for the results of the biopsy. Good news was that the bladder cancer requires no further action but the totally unexpected bad news is that there is a small tumour in his kidney. The consultant has recommended removal of the kidney. This news has come as a huge shock, but the consultant was very positive that this would be a cure and not just treatment, the tumour is early stage (not sure I have the right words).
We have been told the op will take place within 6 weeks and hopefully will be just one overnight stay in hospital followed by 6 weeks recovery time.
Hopefully by the end of the year things will be much better.
I have been feeling very stressed about the biopsy results ( I suffer with depression and anxiety) but now feel calmer now that I have the diagnosis and treatment plan, but will burst into tears if anyone is kind to me! He is absolutely terrified.
I am here I suppose to hopefully make contact with anyone who has been through this procedure, looking for help, support, any thing that you think might be helpful to us.
Thanks for reading.
Hi again I suffer with anxiety too so know how you feel. I think that when these things come our way, we adapt and are able to get through it no matter what. It's normal to worry, even though worrying doesn't change the outcome. From what you've said here and in my thread that you replied to, things don't sound too bad at all. So hold onto that positivity, that while it's a setback, this small tumour is very curable and likely not to cause any further issues.
I've had about a 6 week wait for my op, which is happening on 5th September. I hope your Husband's surgery is arranged very soon, so you both have less time to worry.
Dear MathsLady,
so sorry to hear this sad news about your husband. I hope he's doing ok mentally/emotionally as I know it can be quite difficult for both of you to process this information! Here if you need to vent, ask questions or for general support. Lots of love. I have had my kidney removed 9 weeks today actually, I was just coming out of theatre (well my husband received the call) I was totally out of it! X more info on my profile
You've just described the situation I found myself in this time last year. My tumour was bigger though. I eventually had the kidney op at the end of February after an initial attempt to shrink it with immunotherapy didn't work. My op was a complete success though, and I'm functioning perfectly normally on one kidney. ( I did develop post operative sciatica, though that's another story). I'm now on cabozantinib as a " mop up". After 4 months of it I'm tolerating it pretty well, have been away on holiday, and have returned to work part time. Try not to worry, it sounds like it's been caught early and you are looking at a tough few months, but if your consultant says there's a cure then grab it with both hands! I spent two nights in hospital post op and was home on the third day. Very happy to answer any questions if you think that would be useful.
Hello Arney, thank you for all of your replies. Could I ask you how old you were when you had the op? The consultant said that he would have robotic surgery and would be out the next day, seems very soon after such a major op. How long were you in hospital for? He was also told to take it easy for 6 to 8 weeks, again this doesn't like much. How long did you have to rest for and also how long was it before you felt "back to normal"? We are hoping for normality by the Spring.
Thanks for your support.
Thanks for replying, he was told that his op would be done within 6 weeks, so about the same as you. We are trying to be positive and are thinking in terms of by Spring hopefully it will all be over except for routine checks.
I hope that your op goes well.
