Dear reader,
I'm new here, so I thought I would share a little bit about my journey so far.
A number of week ago, I was referred to a consultant cardiologist by my GP. For a number of months, I had been on medication to lower my blood pressure. At the age of 34, my GP was worried that the medication wasn't doing the trick as she had expected. She referred me to a cardiologist which, at the time I thought was a little much, to investigate further. All a little worrying.
I had some initial tests done which came back normal. The cardiologist recommended an MRI scan to check the blood vessels around my kidneys.
From a cardiology perspective, everything was normal. It was quite the shock to be told there was a growth on my right kidney.
I've since had a CT scan and an appointment with a urologist. The tumour is 3cm and is planned to be removed via partial nephrectomy 24 November.
What I don't understand, is that the urologist can't tell me if it's cancer or not based on the imaging. He said that there's an 80% - 84% probability that it is cancer, but I have to wait until the pathology tests come back after the surgery.
The consultant is excellent at reassuring me, but I find myself feeling all kinds of emotions. Which, objectively, I know is to be expected.
This weekend I've planned to see close family to start breaking the news/perhaps not-news. I wasn't going to tell them until I knew exactly what I was dealing with. But I don't fancy the wrath of my sisters finding out I had surgery without telling them...
Wish me luck.
Very best wishes,
Jonathan
P.s. the blood pressure issue isn't taking up much thinking-space anymore...
Hi Orca1,
I really hope it all went well for you and that you're now resting up. Speak soon
I think it seems to be the way with kidney cancer that they can only predict rather than say with certainty that it’s cancer, I wondered why they couldn’t do a biopsy. I was told from the outset it was 95% certain and, as predicted, it was cancer. At least at 80% there’s a fair possibility that it won’t be. Like you, mine was found on an scan for something unrelated and I’d not had many symptoms. When you hear the word cancer you tend to fear the worst, I got my affairs in order and wrote a Will - five months on from the op to have the kidney and growth removed I’m feeling relatively fit and there’s no sign the cancer had spread. I felt much better once my family knew and they were incredibly supportive. Glad that yours appear to be the same. Good luck and hopefully you’ll be fine after surgery and will just need a bit of time to recover.
Hello ive been diagnoed last week and the plan is keyhole surgery in 2 weeks first operation of any kind had no symptoms whatsoever so totally shocked but have all faith they will do the very best for us
Good that they are getting the operation done so quickly. Good luck - hope it all goes well for you.
Hi ChasM,
It's a bit of a shock isn't it. I'm still holding on to the 15% chance a little bit. But I also flit between that, and preparing for it to be as the surgeon suspects. Only time will tell. Glad your recovery seems to have gone well.
Hello Seven of nine, I'm sorry to hear. I hope it all goes well for you
Hi Jonathan 1989
It went well thank you, took a bit longer than originally thought due to where it was. Am sore but tramadol and paracetamol are helping to manage the pain.
The discharge paperwork says cancer (confirmed). I will find out more when the results are back from pathology / histology and the MDT have met, so just need to focus on recovering from the op for the moment.
Hope you’re managing ok, the date feels ages away but it soon comes round.
Hello Orca1,
Very good to hear from you. I'm glad to hear that it went well for you and I hope your recovery goes well.
It does seem a while away, but I'm quite aware that I only have 2 weekends to go and that makes me feel nervous.
Very best wishes, Jonathan
Hi Jonathan
I know you made this post several months ago, but if you’re still around can I ask how everything went? I hope your procedure went well and you got good news.
I’m experiencing similar to yourself and am awaiting word on having a partial nephrectomy.
My urologist said that there’s still a small chance this could be something like an angiomyolipoma, but I’m sweating it because deep down I feel like it is cancer.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
