On Thursday evening my husband went to a&e with suspected kidney stones. After a 10 hour wait and CT scan they told us he has a 7cm tumour on his kidney. Following another scan on Monday they have found a nodule on his lung and lymph nodes look infected. He has been continually bleeding in urine so they are looking for the source. We've been told it's probably cancer and has probably spread. This has come out of nowhere, we have 3 you g children and I honestly feel like my perfect life is actually falling apart around me.

  • Hi

I'm very sorry to read about your husband's diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis is always a shock but to find out in A&E must be devastating as there are no referrals, appointments etc to give you time to prepare for what you might hear. To come out of there with a cancer diagnosis when there was no suspicion going in... I can't imagine.

I have had a different type of cancer but mine spread very quickly. I could no longer be cured but I could be treated and was referred to an oncologist. I had radiotherapy to improve pain and mobility and I had chemotherapy to kill cancer cells and shrink the tumours. Fortunately the treatment worked and my cancer is stable for now.

Your mind is probably going over everything and not knowing where to start with worries like work, money, childcare etc. I think the best thing to do would be to ring the Macmillan helpline. They will give you sound advice on anything to do with cancer - advice re money worries, benefits, practical support, support for carers. I hope that your husband has a treatment plan soon and that you get the support you need.
