Good Morning
I had a nephrectomy on 12tth June for suspected kidney cancer all went well. I was told I would receive a consultation in 3 weeks. I chased this up and was told it would be a telephone consultation, if I wanted a face to face it would be October. Has anyone else received there diagnoses by telephone, is this normal practise now.
Yes I did in March and to be honest I thought it was better than crying coming through the hospital I personally get embarrassed when I'm upset and at least I was with family whom could support me in private it's very hard to get your head around it good luck wish you all the luck
is this normal practise now.
This is interesting because the driver for the phone consultation approach was to maintain services within the boundaries of lockdown during covid. All restrictions are now lifted, including masks in hospitals. Therefore applying the same logic now would suggest there is no rationale remaining for telephone consultations. But I find the idea that you can have a phone consultation now but you have to wait 2 months for a face-to-face bizarre. It takes the same time for a consultation regardless of delivery method, surely? Is the named consultant working abroad in a sunny place over the summer perhaps?!!
Personal preferences and consultation styles and behaviours surely apply here. My take is that there is a baseline of medical detail above which only face-to-face is appropriate. You read on here a lot that people were told blah over the phone and the fact it was on-the-phone made it worse.
I have been given a few appointments for telephone consultations and one was for a video consultation!! I contacted my CNS who changed them for me to an in person one, as she said she is sure consultant would prefer to see me face to face when explaining treatment. As Mmum says, they are there to take the call, so to see you in person should only affect you, in the fact you have to make the journey to the hospital
Hi
Thanks everyone for your replies. I have had my telephone consultation which was an hour late. I was told it was cancer but a low risk etc. Blood Tests in 5 months, CT scan in 6 months & I have a telephone consultation on 29/2/2024.
I would have preferred a face to face if only to checks my wounds which haven't been checked apart from at my local surgery when I had my staples removed.
Sending my best wishes to everyone.
