Kidney cancer spread to bones

My husband is waiting for his kidney to be removed since February, but they have now found growths in his hip joint which are causing him immense pain. Reading more about this advanced stage, the prognosis is not good. We are focusing on pain management and I don’t know how to discuss with him how short his future life might be?
Is anyone else the support relative for someone in this same  situation please?

  • Good Morning Crispy55

I am sorry to hear that your husband is in so much pain from the growths in his hip joint.

I hope that you are both getting good support from the hospital to manage his pain.

With regard to his prognosis I can understand that this is difficult to speak about with him. Has he got a CNS that could support you with this as they will have all the facts about his personal health and individual prognosis? I found in my own experience my prognosis was bought up, gently, by the oncologist when I was consenting to the treatments. She said I needed to have a basic idea so that I could give informed consent for them. I did not want to know too many details at the time and said that to the doctor. I wanted to be able to cope with the information I was given and just wanted to focus on the treatment ahead.

I see that you are also in the Carers group and wonder whether asking on there may be an idea as there maybe someone who has been in a similar position.

I hope this helps a bit and I hope that they can get your husband's pain under control.

    Jane

  • Hello Crispy,

My brother has kidney cancer which had spread to his hip. He was also in terrible pain but they gave him a hip replacement to remove the tumour and relieve the pain. He is now having immunotherapy which is controlling other tumours but no talk of removing his kidney.

I wonder whether a hip operation like this could be possible for your husband?

    sending you very best wishes,

  • Thank you for replying. Yes my husband has a growth on the hip which is trapping a nerve. I hope they can do something like that for him. He has been told he needs also to lose one kidney completely.
We gave an appointment today and say what they can offer.
All the best to you and your brother.

  • I have kidney cancer myself.  It also spread to the femur on one side and the hip and femur on the other. I had a hip replacement along with the femur on that side and it helped immensely with pain relief.

I also had my femur implant replaced along with a knee replacement Christmas past. Also had a brain tumour removed so I've been through the wars. I'm feeling not so bad now even with all the surgery. We play the cards we are dealt. Definitely recommend anyone to go for a hip replacement as it improves life quality big time!

  • Goodness you ate bionic! Well done for coping with all that surgery and I am pleased to hear that it made a positive difference. It is heartwarming to learn about your story. Thank you for sharing.

  • When I die I think my wife will take me to the scrap yard instead of burying me as there is that much titanium in me! SmileSmileSmile

  • Humour is essential! Don’t go near any strong magnets!

  • They have kept him in hospital to give him radiotherapy hopefully to reduce the pain.

  • Keep pushing for the replacement. I was in serious pain and I kept complaining to my oncologist.  She pushed it fir me. The squeaky wheel gets the oil!

  • I don't know if he is well enough to cope with an operation. That is why they have not removed the kidney yet. He has other issues with his heart and blood pressure. I will certainly ask about hip replacement though. If Urology and Oncology are arguing whether his hip growth is cancerous, just replacing the whole thing would surely solve it. They know more than I do, so decisions are more complicated.
