  1. Hi sorry I am new to this forum. Was with my dad today and was told he has cancer on his kidney.  It was a total shock.  They have said that they may not be able to operate due to his age (77) but he doesn't have any other health issues apart from being on blood thinners as he had a clot on his leg a few years ago. This has come like a bolt out of the blue and was looking for some more information on his prognosis if he doesn't get surgery? Has anyone else been in this situation? Any advice greatly received. Thanks
  • Hi. Sorry to hear your Dad's diagnosis. I've just joined this forum also. My father in law was diagnosed with Kidney cancer earlier this year (also at age 77) and he had this Kidney removed. He spent a few days in hospital and I believe they gave him one round of Chemo whilst he was there. He recovered well initially but his motivation to eat healthy and keep active is low and I very concerned about his general health at the moment. The pathway from diagnosis to removal was relatively quick and his GP is keeping an eye on him. I can't support with prognosis if your Dad doesn't have surgery but sending a virtual hug and hoping he can get the treatment he needs soon

  • Hi, sorry to hear your news , this may help.  My husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2018, he was 81. He also is on blood thinners .   Had his kidney removed but it had spread to his lymph nodes and urethra. He was given 2 yrs.    He went on to have chemo and radiotherapy in 2019/20.  He was then offered immunotherapy which he had one treatment.  He then decided not to have any more.  He had his 86 th birthday in January and although not too mobile he is still going strong, the oncologist doesn’t call him any more but the GPS are amazing and always there if he has any worries.  Best wishes and wishing you dad all the best for the future.

  • Thank you so much for this encouraging news and I really hope your husband keep well  for a long time to come. It's been a complete shock but hopefully they will decide to give him treatment and he comes back stronger x

  • Thank you so much for your kind reply. It's encouraging to know that your father in law has come through this and I hope he improves and has a decent quality of life. A virtual hug to you too Hugging

  • Hi EMCD, I am 71 and had successful nephrectomy and in recovery..It probably not his age but his medical history. Nhs has made huge strides and Im sure he will be given life saving treatment. If he doesnt feel ill he probably wont. I was fine and only have after op pain. Make sure he eats well, exercises and gets fresh air daily. They may reconsider...best wishes. Lxc♡

  • Hi thanks so much, this sounds really encouraging. The doctor we spoke to wasn't very encouraging that he would be offered surgery. He doesn't have many underlying health issues apart from previous blood clots. I'll discuss it with him and hopefully persuade him to push for surgery if he wants it. His age shouldn't be a barrier to getting the treatment he needs x
