I had a CT scan on 1st April following a car crash, this showed a 30mm diameter exophytic lesion emerging from the parenchyma of right kidney plus simple renal cysts. I was discharged from hospital on 5th April to recover from a fractured sternum. I was told my case would go to a Multi Discipline Treatment team for referral.
The hospital was in Harrogate and I live in North Yorkshire - is the referral process across the NHS - will I be able to go to my local cancer centre in Middlesbrough?
I am 67 and active but with a mild heart condition, what is the criteria for treatment?
How large doe a lesion have to be before they will operate, will I have to live with this for some time and what are the chances of it spreading meantime?
Where are the best online resources? UK based and reliable?
Appreciate any pointers
PB
Hi there
You'll likely get referred to your local urology dept first according to your home address. Kidney cancer UK web at www [dot] kcuk [dot] org [dot] uk is useful and this site and cancer research uk good for looking up drugs and treatments. I tend to read lots of medical research papers at pubmed but it's not for everyone.
The standard treatment approach is for "stuff" < 4cm, watch and wait with regular scans to see whether it's growing. If it gets larger than that then they can do a biopsy to determine if it's cancer or not and/or perhaps remove it or the whole kidney. Basically the idea is to get rid of it before it spreads. But even if it spreads outside the kidney (mine has) then there are lots of treatment options.
It might not be cancer. And you'd only get referred to your local oncology unit if it was confirmed to be cancer and once spread (I think).
I was contacted by the Harrogate Cancer team and they have referred me to the local unit. Waiting for a guided biopsy...fingers crossed
Hi PeterBenn'2022
I was also admitted to Harrogate were my CT scan showed up a growth on my right kidney.
The team there were great and helped with the referral to James Cook (also Friarage for CT scans etc ) the team are brilliant at JCUH.
Let me know if you need anything else information wise.
Please stay positive.
Mike
