Feeling scared and ill

Hello everyone. I was diagnosed, out of the blue, with kidney cancer 10 days ago. I had been in hospital with pneumonia and had to have 3.5l of pleural fluid drained from around my left lung. They did a full CT scan from my shoulders down, and discovered a 6cm tumour which the consultant said he is positive is malignant.

I have my first appointment with the MDT on 19th January. However, I now have a water infection. I have been having various infections for months. My immune system doesn't seem to be working properly. My GP thinks it's due to the cancer????

I also have had a very dry mouth for 10 weeks and can only manage liquids. I am losing so much weight. I am scared I will not be in a fit state for treatment. I am scared of more infections. I am scared.

  • My advice to anyone newly diagnosed is to concentrate on what you actually know as fact.  At this stage it's easy for our minds to run away, dreaming up lots of what-if scenarios which may never come true.  The CT Scan may show the consultant signs of cancer, but there's a wide range of growth structures and I would think a biposy is the only way to be sure hat you are dealing with.  Some have a very low risk of being cancer.  There are also different types of kidney cancer even if he is correct, many are treatable/curable.  Also, there are 6cm growths which turn out to be benign.  Size is not the determinant.  I was diagnosed with a 4.2cm kidney growth which turned out to be benign and is being left untreated.

I would talk to your GP about your weight loss.  There may be liquid supplements which will help you maintain your weight and this may make you feel better.

It's completely natural for us to feel nervous at this investigation stage. Once we know for certain what we are dealing with, things can start to settle down.

  • Oh dear Lucy locket ( great name) I am sorry to hear you sound so scared x As Cm has said it’s so easy to focus on the what ifs. This is something which all of us have done. I also think that it’s extra hard for you when already feeling so unwell.

I hope that you start to feel better soon. I find trying to distract myself helps me…..reading and watching TV, listening to music etc.

let us know how you get on. Sending you a big hug Jules x

  • Thank you. I am scared primarily of the infections I have been getting, and if it's due to the cancer, or just coincidence. I need to be well enough for cancer treatment, don't I.

  • Very similar to my recent experience, following a period of breathledness fluid drain on my left lung I was diagnosed after a CT scan, about 3 weeks ago. My treatment has only just started. You have not mentioned a Biopsy, this can  be done with the Pleural fluid. It should confirm the cancer type and dictate what treatment is most suitable

  • They didn't find any cancer cells in my pleural fluid. Hopefully this means it hasn't spread from my kidney.

Do you have kidney cancer too? I can't work out how to find your posts or profile, sorry.
