I am at my wits end it is now 8 months since I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma and I am still waiting for my operation to have my kidney removed and start dialysis

I have rung everywhere and can’t get any answers I can’t get to speak to anyone and if I leave a message no one rings me back

my mental health is suffering I’m in a lot of pain I don’t know which way to turn I’m not a pushy person and find it difficult to complain which gets me really stressed I do try to be positive but it’s getting more difficult every day

I thought if cancer was suspected there were time limits on how long you had to wait for treatment

I don’t know where to turn for help

  • Hello, I am so sorry to hear what is happening with you and how your mental health is suffering as a consequence. I too experienced waiting for my op and had to go privately in the end.

I think that all together it was around £11 K and the hospital did provide an interest free credit payment option. It’s pretty poor that’s what I had to resort to and I was blessed as able to do so. Once I got the op date, the anxiety reduced so much.

I too am not a pushy person, but this is important and sometimes you need to stick up for yourself.

Are you able to see your specialist for a consultation privately, even if you can’t afford the operation. You would at least get the opportunity to tell them how you feel. If that isn’t an option, why not write to the hospital outlining how you feel and the fact that you are in pain. Have you got any other symptoms such as blood in your urine or weight loss, if so do mention this.

If you have been allocated a specialist nurse then you could contact them. There is also the PALS team at the hospital….Patient Advisory Liaison Service, they can speak up on your behalf.

My GP was good in trying to speed things up, although he wasn’t really able to do so, he was very supportive and kept contacting the hospital on my behalf. This made me feel as though ai wasn’t on my own with it all

If you don’t get anywhere then you could consider contacting the Chief  Executive of the Trust.

As hard as it is, don’t give up ringing and if someone says they will get someone else to ring you back, make sure you get their name, as that may ensure that they pass the message on.

When you feel down, do message as we all care and can at least listen x

    Big hugs, Jules xx

  • What?  That's pants.  Share your experience with your MP - write a letter.  There are gov targets for how long people wait for treatment.

  • Hi, that’s an awful long time to have to wait, I’m not surprised your mental health is suffering. I’d be inclined to get in touch with PALS at your hospital. Their very good and I’m sure you’ll hear something soon if you do that. I can’t understand why their taking so long. Hope you hear soon xx
