Had initial pains under right rib approx Xmas, went to GP beginning march Blood tests,Ultrasound identified tumour,CT scan gave better view.Recommended by consultant a partial or full nephrectomy, not something I am considering given differing advice as in 80% likely RCC,70% likely, leaflets about the procedure say 10 to 15% nephrectomies were not necessary as then tested clear. So agreed to a needle biopsy,2 weeks ago, doctor took 2 samples but unfortunately didn't show a tumour cells,so they missed it,not large 3-4 cm,result today.Have agreed to another biopsy hoping this will be clearer.

Is this common at all, what if the 2nd is also a miss ?

  • Oh no, nightmare!  The risk of not hitting the tumour is always there, I think.  I believe it's one of the drivers for NOT doing a biopsy.  Sometimes it can be difficult to hit it, if it's small or in an awkward place.  Did they use CT or US to guide the biopsy?  The fact they are trying again sounds positive, that they believe they can get a sample.

I had a successful RCC biopsy, ie they hit it.  It's good yours has been detected before any potential spread.  There's lots of treatment available and various options for RCC too.  I'd suggest just take it one step at a time.

  • The first was Usound, just got appt for CT guided biopsy, hopefully this works, thanks for your reply.

  • Hello!!

I am in same boat as you. No symptoms, just incidental finding on doing regular check up. Same as u tumor 3.5 cm. First was ultrasound and than CT on February. Initially consultant suggested surgery is the first line treatment and I agreed but then he suggested to do biopsy and go for surgery. I agreed so that I will  also know if its cancer or not., It was CT guided biopsy took 2 and half hours in and out of scanner 100 times and there was another machine beside too. Result came back normal tissue but consultant thinks they might not have got right sample.

I am also so not keen to have nephrotomy as no conformed diagnosis and as u say it say some time it's not necessary. I had another scan after 6 month, no changes on tumor. Consultant advising surgery but I said I want active monitoring for a while and see if it's actually growing, if it's a cancer? Very hard decision. Consultant asking me to make decision but I have requested to be on active monitoring, so will be scan in 6 months , so I can make my mind.

I am also indecisive at present and asked to stay on monitoring which my consultant does not look much happy about.

Please keep posted what u have decided , and where u are at. Stay strong, keep postedPrayPrayPray

  • Thanks to Charles making Monday a bank holiday,my 2nd biopsy is now cancelled,as many other people finding out today.I have had a lot of typical symptoms, including weight loss so I am expecting it will be RCC,but will await new appt.

I'm thinking the same with monitoring, maybe think differently if it should grow.Thankyou for your reply,I hope it's a good sign you don't have any typical symptoms, had a lot of pain initially, even though high codeine use for sciatica.

  • bank holiday bummer.  I feel for you - how frustrating.
