Hello everyone
just want to say hello, I've just been diagnosed (just before Christmas) with kidney cancer. Everything's a bit of blur at the moment and just trying to get my head around it. So glad I've found this place. Will post more when I feel a bit stronger in myself, there's a lot to take in isn't there?
Thanks for reaching out to me - it's a very lonely place, even when you're surrounded by a loving family and friends. I am waiting for a date for a radical nephrectomy of the right kidney - have to go to London (Royal Free Hospital) from deepest darkest North Wales (!). Since the diagnosis every little niggle or discomfort sends me into a blind panic.
Yes, it's the waiting that creates the anxiety - and this awful Omicron just adds another layer of stress. Hope you get a date soon - wishing you all the best & sending positive vibes and love. We seem to be on very similar paths - it's good that we can be there virtually! for each other.
Hi Betty, thank you so much for replying. How are you doing post-operatively? I can't believe I have a kidney tumour as I was feeling OK until I started with a UTI last July. I wasn't diagnosed with cancer until I had an ultrasound scan last November (that was delayed because of Covid backlog). Did you have any obvious symptoms? Sorry to be so nosy! It's good to hear from someone else who's been through the same thing.
Hi Friars, Hello! Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Similar position here. Diagnosed 24 Nov - is that just before Christmas? No symptoms. It was found as part of investigations into a persistent cough, adverse liver function tests, ultrasound and then the defining CT scan. It's spread to my lungs though so I'm starting immunotherapy in Jan. I can't wait! I met my oncology team just 3 days before xmas. I like them a lot already - we talked kidney cancer geek for 90+ mins. It was great to be treated like an adult.
Good luck and keep us updated xXx
Hi Friars
I had no symptoms until I had blood in my urine iat the end of May which was a dreadful shock. At first it was thought that I might just have a water infection but no such luck. Then a camera into my bladder and CT scan of kidneys and lungs.
I think that I was lucky to be so quick in having my key hole surgery because my Surgeon thought that my cancer was worse than it actually was and I had started to bleed a lot more which wasn't pleasant. I have been lucky as so far my cancer hasn't spread so apart from 6 monthly scans and phone checks with my Consultant I don't have to have any more treatment.
Hopefully you will get a similar result after your operation.
It will take you about 2 weeks after the surgery to feel like doing a great deal as you will feel sore and you have to be a bit careful not to move too suddenly but your body will tell you how soon you can do things.
Take care and talk about how you feel to your family and friends as mine were a great help to me.
Betty
Hi Betty, thanks for the reply. I am due to have a CT on my lungs on the 6th - don't know why they didn't do one when I had the kidney/bladder scan 5 weeks ago - I'm starting to worry about that now too. I know they have to do it before I have the op, but I'm just so paranoid about everything now - such is the way of anxiety. Apparently my urine is clear and they did a blood test for u&e just before Christmas which was OK. The tumour is approx 8cm - which makes me think that it's been there for a bloody age. Just want rid now. One again, thanks for telling me your story, wishing you well for this new year.
