Hello everyone,

I'm new to this community forum, I've just been notified last month by my urologist that I have a tumour in my right kidney after they reviewed my CT scan, they are unsure about the nature of this mass but they think it's 70% malignant :|

The urologist has given me three options to choose from, whether to biopsied this mass to understand its nature, taking into consideration the critical location of the mass at the top of the kidney and very close to the pleural (the radiologist already tried with different techniques but ended with the fact that there could be a high probability of pneumothorax), or to proceed with partial nephrectomy or active surveillance and come back after few months to see whether this mass has grown (which is not recommended as per other specialists' opinion)

I'm a bit confused now and not sure what could be the right decision.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone with similar experience, I really appreciate your support during this hard time and uncertainty.

Thank you all.

Kandil

  • Hello Kandil

I have been in a similar position. I have had the biopsy and am due to have nephrectomy next month.

It is a worry, especially with the current circumstances we find ourselves in too.

I have been advised to expect chemotherapy as a precautionary after surgery. The support I have received from other members of this community has helped me get it straight in my head. There are so many thoughts and feelings running through your head when you leave the consultant and this is a good site to communicate your concerns.

Please keep us updated and feel free to communicate further if you wish.

    Take care

  • Hi

I'd go for the partial nephrectomy.  Because once they've removed the tumour they will send it for analysis so you will get the nature of the mass anyway.

A biopsy to amend 70% chance of malignancy seems to offer very little.

My mass they said was cancer, straight up, so I didn't have this "is it, isn't it" debate.

I have kidney cancer which has spread to lungs, so I am too late for the nephrectomy option.  If a partial-N is available to you, all well and good.  I'd grab it with both hands.   Let us know how you get on.

    Good luck.

  • Hello Mmum,

Thank you for advising on this, my sincere thoughts and warm wishes go with you, and I wish you a fast recovery and to get rid of this unpleasant guest

I think the partial nephrectomy is the obvious right choice in the first place, I guess what's stopping me from making that decision is simply the question: why should I go for an operation of that kind especially since I'm not yet 100% sure it is really necessary, I mean if the mass turned to be benign (hopefully).

However, it's good to be decisive in such a situation rather than to be hesitant and end up regrating not making the right choice at the right time.

I'll share with you the updates as soon as there are any.

Thank you very much and take care.

  • Hello Carney,

Thank you for sharing your case, I really hope that your surgery next month will be a smooth one and that you will get well quickly and have a fast recovery, please keep us updated.
I can't really describe how much worrying this period is, but I started feeling more comfortable when I read more of members' comments across this forum, and that road signs became more visible now rather than the foggy picture that I had for the past few weeks.

I'll definitely keep you updated with what's going to happen with me.

Thank you once again and take care too :)
