Hi.

I've just joined after being diagnosed with kidney cancer.

This was found accidentally after having a CT scan for a collapsed lung on BUPA.  They saw an abnormality on the kidney on the last CT slice and a few days later had me back for a further ultrasound.

It was here that the consultant found a 7cm tumour and later that evening after reviewing, confirmed it, putting in an urgent CT scan request.

Today  I'm having another CT on the area. I think to assess the stage it's at.

I'm 51, and this is out of the blue really (I've had back pain for a year but put this down to posture, working from home and not having a proper chair). No other symptoms.

I'm sat waiting to go now, a little scared, worried and down.

I've googled, and shouldn't have and I'm trying to stay positive.

  • MarkCCwelcome to welcometMarkCCwelcome to the kidney cancer  group..Hope the CT scan today went well.

Kidney cancer' s a slow grower compared with other cancer,so often removal of the offending kidney sorts the problem.

If not, there are lots of meds which can be used successfully on it n more being developed all the time.

Many of us in the group have been on meds for years to keep our cancer stable. It's monitored via regular scans.

I've been living with mine for 16:years now n still have routine scans every 3 to 4 months.

Dr google's frequently out of date re such things as kidney cancer coz treatments are changing so quickly,so avoid googling if you can!

That said, it sounds as if you'll soon get the results of today's scan n will know what's gonna happen next.

Once you've gotta treatment plan in place, you'll  feel a lot more settled.

If you can, take someone with you when you see the urologist. They can then take notes for you to refer to later Also, cultivate the cancer nurse specialist when it comes to it. They're an invaluable source of info plus s general all round contact to have.

Thank you buttercup. Thats very positive and really good advice. I've had my scan, and results will be (hopefully) available tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your response. its given me a lift and its much appreciated. I think you're right and once I know more and can plan, it will give me something to build on.

Hi, I'm recovering from a radical nephrectomy (day 11 post op) to remove my left kidney and a 9cm tumour. Had no symptoms and this was found on a scan for something unrelated. Things moved very fast and i went from 1st urology appt to operation in 15 days!  It's only just sinking in now what ive had done and i keep being reminded that it took a while for the tumour to grow and it seems to have been localised - still waiting pathology results.  Also, lots of friends telling me to behave and look after myself - I'm a terrible patient!!

This is a great place to ask any questions you have, loads of great threads to read or somewhere to ask questions.   Try not to google too much!!

I'm 58 and not very fit but this has been a wake up for me, need to look after my remaining kidney now!!

Good luck and update your progress on here.

Take care, Gill T Slight smile

  • Hello  and welcome to the kidney cancer group.

Kidney cancer's a slow grower, compared to other cancers so you could have actually had your tumour for years without knowing it. I had a similar sized one which the urologist said I could've had for 5 to 10 years.

Do let us know your pathology results and what the treatment plan is when you know it. It always seems more settled somehow  when you know what to expect.

    Hi Buttercup01

I was told this probably grew over a few years and generally people have no symptoms.

Hope to have a phone consultation sometime this week with pathology results so I'll let you know what they say.  Before the op i was told it looked like T2 due to tbe size but the rest was unknown.

    Enjoy your day x

  • Thanks

Hi Gill, thanks for the message and hope you're feeling OK. I had a call from the Consultant Urological Surgeon on Wednesday as an introduction. They were in a multi disciplinary meeting and he had a chance to look at my scans at the end with another consultant. The good news, he said, was that it was contained.

The next meeting is this Wednesday when they will look again properly and then I will have a face to face to agree next steps. He did say that he felt the kidney needs to be removed but they will review and discuss at the meeting. Like you, I think things will move quite fast after that.

Ive stopped googling and feel more positive now :)
