hello

ive had a whirlwind 2 weeks, had a scan for a bowel problem which showed an 8cm tumour on my kidney.  Currently isolating for my nephrectomy operation next week. I'm worried that as I'm quite unfit it will affect my recovery and wondered if anyone had any tips to help? Also what to expect after the op.  How long have others had to stay in hospital, etc.

Had no symptoms from it and am hoping it's not spread anywhere else.  I'm not a very good patient, apparently I'm too independent by far! And because of a hypermobility condition am limited to what exercise I can do.

Thanks Slight smile

  • Hi  welcome to the kidney cancer group. Like you, I was unfit when I had my nephrectomy 16 years ago. I'm not a typical case, in terms of how long I had to stay in so am hoping someone else will answer that bit. I was in longer because I kept being sick, the reason being because I'd not eaten. Once I ate,  ( ginger biscuits)I was up n out!

They'll probably get you up n mobilizing quite swiftly, with a Zimmer frame at first.

Once you have a treatment plan, that'll help you feel more settled- whatever you have to face.

It may b that surgery is the end of it. However, many of us are on meds to keep the cancer at bay n v effective they are too!

Kidney cancer's  a slow grower compared with other cancers n there are many meds available to treat it, with more coming up all the time.

Do take someone with you when you see the oncologist after your op - to take notes of the conversation, so you can look back at these later. Also, the cancer specialist nurses are ppl to get to know - they are a mine of info n a useful go between you n the oncologist.

You'll probably have regular scans, to check all's OK for some time, eg I'm still having them  16 years on but it's worth it for the reassurance.

If there's anything you want to ask, fire away - someone in the group will have been there n done that

Let us know how the op goes n your first visit to the oncologist. We're here for you,

    Best wishes,

    Sue

Thank you, makes things clearer. This has been a check for me - I'm 58 and need to get a grip of my fitness!! No more excuses and having an extra biscuit Wink

I've been in forums on here before so know there's lots of support (breast cancer 7 yrs ago)

I remember someone saying to me 'there are no daft questions on here, only answers based on experience!'

Hi GT62, I'm new to the group. My 74 years young Mum had her left kidney and associated tubes removed on 1 March 2021. She was in hospital a total of 6 days and mobile the day after the op. She is making a remarkable recovery. Although we're now waiting to hear when she's due to start Chemo, as the tumour was located in her ureter but cancer was discovered in her removed kidney. Wishing you well and strength for a speedy recovery from your op!

  • Hello welcome to the group. Wow, your mum's doing well at her age!

Let us know how she gets on with her future treatment.

Thank you! Hope your mum's treatment goes well. Had op on Wednesday and they're keeping me for a couple of days as bowel seems to be in spasm. But the nursing staff are fab. Will update when I'm not zonked out by pain relief!! X

  • Hello  look forward to your update when you're less zonked out.
