Pain relief

I have a tumour on my right kidney. It was discovered about a year and a half ago and I’ve been on active surveillance at the Freeman in Newcastle.

my consultant has told me that my treatment will be a fully open nephrectomy as I have a lot of scar tissue. Unfortunately covid is making the wait for surgery longer than originally planned. My big problem at the moment is pain relief. Because I had to have a gastric bypass and my gallbladder removed, I can’t tolerate any opium based painkillers. I currently have paracetamol, and frankly on heavy days, it’s not much help. My GP tried duloxotine (?) and that caused the same extreme chest pains as opiate pain killers.

Does anyone have any suggestions or similar experience? I’m waiting to get to the pain management clinic, but my GP is not convinced they will be much help.
Thanks x

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that you're having to wait longer than normal for a nephrectomy and that you're in pain.

I can't help with any suggestions of non-opiate based pain killers but I noticed that you hadn't had any responses yet. I'm tagging this group's Community Champion into my reply as she may be able to help you further.

You could also post your question in the ask a nurse section of the community if your GP has been unable to help.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

I hope you manage to get this sorted soon.

    Thank you.

just don’t feel like forums are for me. Just not my comfort zone.

  • Is there anything we can do to make you feel more comfortable here ?

  • Hi  you could try ringing the helpline on 0808 808 0000 re your pain relief question, if you're not comfortable with using a forum.  You can ask to speak to a nurse.

    Hope that helps,

    • Sue
