Hello everyone,

I’m a 37 year old female and I was diagnosed with kidney cancer (left kidney) on Tuesday.

my timeline is roughly as follows: mid July I gave a urine sample to my GP as I had visible blood in my urine and I suspected a UTI. As the results came back free of infection,  but showing blood, my GP referred me for further tests.

i had an ultrasound and x ray last week and was called in to see a consultant on Tuesday. From the ultrasound, she told me it’s likely I have cancer, it’s likely my left kidney will need to be removed and the extent of the cancer can only be determined by a CT scan.

I had my CT scan today (I am aware this is going incredibly quickly which makes me feel very fortunate, but, inevitably, it also feels very slow to me!) I have been told that the results of the CT scan will likely be available in the next week.

What I am scared of is-

i had no symptoms apart from the blood. But doesn’t this present quite late? Does this indicate that it’s quite advanced already?

I am not in a typically “at risk” group for this and I am relatively young. Does this mean it’s likely to be more aggressive?

the fact the consultant seemed fairly adamant the kidney would need to come out from the ultrasound- does that mean it’s likely quite large already? Or the fact that she’s talking about treatment - is that a positive sign? As if it were terminal, surely they’d leave it?

I am very scared and I appreciate I am tending towards the negative. I have three boys- 2,5 and 7 and I am afraid of dying and not being around for them growing up.

Many thanks for reading.

Kate

  • Well done for getting your kidney scanned. The op is quite long n recovery varies. If u can, concentrate on getting as fit as possible beforehand.

Good luck on the 27th n keep us informed on progress. My son was just 10 when I'd my op. He's now 25.

  • Hello

welcome to the community n this group in particular. Treatment for kidney cancer is usually to remove the affected kidney. As you've also got a brain met, you might want to join the Brain, secondary cancer group as well. I'm a member of that too, having had a brain met treated by cyberknife (stereotactic radiotherapy) in 2013 .I've been on Pazopanib since then - apart from a treatment break of almost 3' years between 2016 n 2019. Many in this group are on that drug. It's not without side effects n we each tend to have different ones, but they are often treatable with meds or bearable.. For instance, you tend to develop bright white straight hair. (Mine was curly auburn n came back as curly grey when I'd the break)

If you've got any questions, do ask as someone here will probably have something to say on the subject !

  • Hi k8star

I can understand how you feel with 3 young ones.

My son was 10 when I was first diagnosed at age 48. He's now 25 n I'm still here.

Kidney cancer is a slow grower, compared with other cancers. The fact you've presented with blood doesn't necessarily mean it's late on. Surgery is often the treatment for kidney cancer n sometimes that's all that's needed.

You're definitely tending towards the negative n  will feel better once you've got a treatment plan in place. Do keep us up to date with things n try n b a bit more positive!

  • Hi K8star,

I am a bit ahead of you: blood in urine in May, CT scans followed and an operation to remove left kidney in mid July. My surgeon says that is all that is needed for now with scans every six months. I am however nearly 30 years older than you, definitely not fit and, I am afraid to say, very overweight. I am, however, well on my way to getting thinner and fitter, although, sadly, not younger! Stuck out tongue winking eye

I just wanted to say that I hope your op goes as well as mine did and that your recovery is as swift. I was up and walking round the ward quickly and once back home, with just a couple of days in hospital, after a day or so rarely needed any painkillers, not even paracetamol. Luckily, my husband made sure I did not overdo it and took good care of me. I got tired quickly but walked a little bit further every day. Now, I am amazed at how neat and quick-healing my scars are compared to the much older and larger hysterectomy scar. I think it is natural to be frightened and to fear the worst but we have to be brave and hope for the best. Good luck and best wishes to you.

  • Hi  )

I'm a member of the brain, secondary cancer group having had it treated by cyberknife( stereotactic radiotherapy) in 2013. It's now just monitored by MRI scans every few months.

.As @gragon says there are ppl in that group who have more experience of brain mets .

Hi, I hope your operation went well. I am female 51, diagnosed  on 23rd of August with big tumor on my kidney and on a waiting list for kidney removal. The waiting is extremely hard for me. Please tell me how to cope with the stress if you can. Thank you

  • Hi @zmeido_pk, welcome to the kidney cancer group, tho I'm sure you'd rather not be here!

Wating is the worse thing, whether it's for the op, scan results or whatever. I try not to think about my scan results for instance in between scans.

It's best if you can focus on something else, to keep your mind occupied, otherwise the " monkey mind" takes over.

How about a good book or box set or some craft activity you enjoy?

Anybody else got any suggestions? We've all been there after all

Once you have a date for the op,plus  a treatment plan in place you'll feel better about the whole thing. Do let us know how you get on.

Thank you! I used to do a lot of knitting. I also recently started  hand wool spinning for the first time and I love it.I bought lots of fleeces not knowing my diagnose.I also tried to learn to play the piano for the last 6 years with no great result. Now I cant stop thinking about my diagnose and everything else lost sense. My stash is full of yarn for years ahead and I wish I were able to knit it all. So scared. Its been a week since I know. Havent cried yet, just shaking and feeling sick.
