Hello, I underwent a Robotic left upper Nephroureterectomy on the 2nd of September 2026. I am recovering well albeit a little tired at times. My operation scars have healed well and are nearly invisible. I have my post op meeting with my surgeon this week. What can I expect in terms of recovery, future treatment and general expectations. I am a 76 year old man who is relatively fit- playing golf 4/5 times a week, walking and gardening. Any insights or advice would be gratefully received.

  • Hi fellow golfer!!

I had a partial left side nephrectomy a year ago today (I’m 69). I’ve got my second 6 monthly CT scan on Saturday at the Hallamshire in Sheffield.
I took a 6 month sabbatical from golf as the tiredness was overwhelming to start with, particularly in the first 3 months. I started walking short distances a week after my op -  my husband walked me around the block and we increased the distance every other day. I’ve been playing golf twice and sometimes, three times a week since July and once a week from April until July.

My advice would be to listen to your body and when you are tired - rest!! I’ve been very lucky physically but had to manage my anxiety sometimes particularly in the middle of the night when I’m wide awake and my brain is on overdrive. I try and imagine playing some of the hardest holes on my course and it stops me from going into an irrational dark place about my cancer!!

Good luck with your recovery and happy golfing once you get back on the course!! We are opening a bottle of fizz tonight to celebrate my first year on the road to recovery!!

This forum has been great for me so hopefully you will get the answers support you need too. Take care.
