My partner had a full nephrectomy in 2022 aged 42 due to a 15cm tumour being found on his right kidney. Thankfully he's been cancer free since then, made a full recovery and been living a normal life. Today he received his routine ct scan results over the phone. They've found a 2cm "cyst" with an 8mm hard centre on his remaining kidney. Actually told him that it was 1.5cm at last year's scan (with no hard centre) despite them telling us at the time that there was no issues with his scan, not sure if this is normal?
Next steps: They said he needs an MRI scan. I guess this is to determine if it's benign or the other thing again.
Just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar. Obviously thinking the worst that the big C is back as its another issue with his kidney. Also worried that he only has the one kidney left now so what happens if they can't preserve it?
One thing I have learned about kidney cancer from my many Q&A sessions with my onco is that there are always options.
I have asked about "what happens if it re-grows". I like to stay one step ahead of the bu55er because it helps me prepare. The answer to this was that my oncos would treat it again with the immunotherapy drug that was relatively successful before, but change the second drug. Also there is not just one drug, but many subtlely different drugs and where one might not have the desired effect, another one might. The oncos know about the relative merits of each and what to try and when.
There are other treatments that don't involve kidney removal. I'm stage 4 and my RCC is 23mm (was 59mm) shrunk and managed by immunotherapy. I've finished treatment now.
There are other ways to zap a growth too, like freezing (cryotherapy/ablation).
Anyway, right now it's a cyst and under investigation. Nothing sinister.
Since 2022 treatment has progressed and now many people get pembrolizumab as an adjuvant treatment to mitigate against re-growth. This could be an option.
