Infection

Hi can anyone tell me if it’s possible to get an infection. My mum has started to have blood in her urine today and keeps feeling hot and feels really tired and keeps falling asleep. We called the doctor and he has prescribed some antibiotics which I think is for a water infection. We’re still waiting for treatment to start and I just feel she’s getting worse everyday. This has been going on since her scan in February. She’s hardly eating and  when she does she’s gets acid and is sometimes sick. I’m just hoping this all eases when the immunotherapy starts. I can’t stand seeing her get more poorly everyday and there is nothing I can do to help. If anyone has experienced this please share as I’m just thinking the worst. Thanks x

  • HI Ariel,

It can be common to get infections with Kidney cancer. Did the doctor come out to review your mum? If not my suggestion would be to insist on your mum getting a face to face review. There could be other reasons she is getting hot, and falling a sleep a lot is concerning you.

The other suggestion would be to contact 111 and ask them for advice to. I take it the medication to help with the acid is not helping and might need to be reviewed again. Of course if gettiglng worse then A and E is another option.

    All the best,

  • Thanks Jamie. No they just spoke to her over the phone. The medication for the acid isn’t working as of yet but it’s only been 2 days but we will call her specialist nurse if it doesn’t improve. I think I’m just panicking about everything at the moment because it’s seems to be taking so long to start treatment. They’re still waiting on lung biopsy results before they can start. Just hoping everything improves once it gets going.

  • Its perfectly normal to feel anxious, stressed and worried. It is hard to see those we love start to get more poorly in front of us.

The new medication should start to work but if not improving then might need to increase dose or change to a different type. Its hard as we cant give medical advice as such but I do know some antacid medications you can still take something like gaviscon in between but best to read the patient leaflet or ask a pharmacist who can give advice too which is quicker than waiting to call a doctor. Also try and enough eating little and often to prevent acid build up intnhe stomach. Could even try a small glass of full fat milk, milkshake or ice cream, yogurts with high fat as this can help the stomach acid to have somethig to work on.

However, if you do feel your mum is getting worse then please ring 111. An infection can be worrying.

It might be best to ring the nurse to find out when you are likely to get the lung results as the waiting is the worst part and not knowing what treatment is going to be offered.

    Hope this helps,
