Hi Guys,

hope everyone is ok. So today when my husband returned from work he said let's go for a drive, so I got in the car, first time since 21/6/24 date of my operation. I drove along some quiet country roads. It felt ok, not completely discomfort free but ok. I also did an emergency stop x2, that was ok! No pain felt at that point. I'm mentally preparing myself to return to work on the 21/8 - 8 weeks post op. I'm anxious but returning on reduced hours! Anyone else back at work!? How did you feel?

  • Hello Jd19801

I hope you don't mind me replying as my cancer was different to yours but by doing so it will bump your post. Hopefully someone who has had a similar journey will then see it and respond.

I am pleased to hear that you are recovering from your surgery and felt well enough to have a drive with your husband. It is a big thing to return to work after such a diagnosis and treatment and if talking things through would help, then please do give the Support Line a call.

It is understandable that you are anxious about returning but doing so on reduced hours sounds like a sensible thing to do. I hope that work will be supportive during your return. Macmillan Work advisors can also be contacted via the Support Line or the Ask an Expert section if you do need to talk through any issues.

I wish you well for your continued recovery and hope that your return to work goes smoothly.

  • Thank you for reaching out xx  I've read your blogs, wow you truly are amazing xx

  • Actually i feel like my debts grow too fast and i have to go back to work next week after urology appointment. I have to.

  • That's the problem. No work, no pay other than SSP. So I also need to return. Am I looking fwd to it! NO!!! But I need to return.

  • If you call the Support Line and speak with one of the Financial advisors they will be able to tell you if you are entitled to any financial support. You can also do via online chat- I did it myself and they were really helpful.

  • I paid around 60k taxes in last 5 years and now when i cant work i get 500 monthly Trust me im my best advisor and no i dont want to be ENTITLED to nothing I see too many people entitled . I will go back to work .

  • How was appointment??

  • I'm going back too. Worked all my life since I was 16, I'm 43, no breaks etc, like you say they will only pay around £116 per week approximately , that won't even cover my weekly food bill. So definitely time to go back, albeit reduced hours but it's fine. I'll have to suck up my little bit of discomfort in my abdominal area etc...I can't do anything else. I equally think work want me back! I might be wrong they have not pressured me which is great. But my colleague over the past two weeks or so has started messaging me to say how busy work is etc etc making me feel very guilty! I'm sure she hasn't meant it in that way but unfortunately because I'm conscientious it's played on my mind and I've not really settled or rested! Time to return . I wish I was wealthy and not need to rush back after such a major procedure! Never mind

  • I am sorry if I caused offence- it was not the intention.  I was in a similar position where I only had SSP and that stopped during my treatment. For me surgery was not enough and I went on to have chemotherapy and external radiotherapy- both of which have left me with long term issues. I was advised to claim PIP which is not means tested.

I understand your frustration as I had always worked and only stopped for the cancer. SSP is not enough to live on.

I wish you well with your continued recovery and return to work.
