Have just got my official letter for my Radical Nephrectomy operation.

For a start it's on Sunday ( 4th )

Secondly it's just a day appointment. Can't believe that.

Has anyone else had a Keyhole Radical Nephrectomy, just as a day patient.

  • Hi snellijw,

I am 4weeks post op from a robotic radical nephroureterectomy and I was only in for 24hrs as the leaflet I was handed called it an enhanced recovery programme! Tbh it is good to get home asap and apart from feeling sore and having the catheter for ten days all was good.

I wish you well with your surgery and hope you will recover quickly

    take care x

  • Thanks,

Just a bit concerned it's a day procedure.

  • Try not to worry, they will only discharge you if they are happy with your recovery programme, I have been lucky to have a brilliant oncology nurse, who I can email anytime with any concerns and she responds very quickly to any concerns I have.

  • I too had a robotic nephrectomy and was admitted as a day patient but was advised I might very well be kept in as I have other health issues that might have hampered my recovery. I went in on the Wednesday and was cleared for discharge on the Friday morning once they were happy  that I could pee by myself (no catheter) and my blood pressure was stable. Being at home was much better I was able to sleep for a start rather than being woken by bleeping machines or nurses wheeling around squeaky blood pressure monitors in the middle of the night. I wish you well with your procedure and please don’t worry they won’t send you home if they’re not happy that you’ll be ok.

  • Thank You Carol.

I want to go home as soon as possible, but don't want to be pushed out the door if not ready.

Not that confident I would get support from my GP.

  • I had a radical nephrectomy using the keyhole method March of 2022. I was in the hospital for 3 days and needed the care initially but like others have said it was great to get home and sleep. But don’t rush and see how you feel. I made some adjustments since and feel great 1 year on, don’t worry you will get back to being yourself, it just takes time to recover.
