I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the drug Sunitinib please? My dad has grade 4 renal cancer which after 4 great years following kidney removal has now spread to his brain and also lungs, although the brain tumour is what the consultant is most concerned about. After having less than 50% of thr brain tumour removed in an operation and palliative radiotherapy to help with his side effects of the tumour (major right side weakness), the consultant has offered to treat with Sunitinib. He has been very clear it might help slow down the lung tumors but have little effect on the brain tumour, and has very devastating side effects that with lack of mobility may be harder to deal with. It's an ongoing treatment so no real break although 2 weeks on and 1 week off. My dad has to decide between quality of life and quantity of life and although it's completely his decision I feel like I need to explore what others have gone through to understand if it could be an option for him. We've not been giving any timescales with or without the drug. Thank you.

  • Hi Louisims,

I think most of us are now on Pazopanib or other " sister" drugs to Sunitinib.

Sunitinib was the first one developed in that family of drugs and is now quite old, but obviously still used in some cases. I would imagine the side effects would b very similar, ie sickness, diarrhoea, taste changes, bright white hair. .Altho if your dad took it 2 weeks on n  1 week off these would be less pronounced, as the Sunitinib wouldn't have chance to build up a cumulative effect re side effects. The sickness n diarrhoea can b dealt with by drugs, the taste changes usually improve after a break.

    Hope that helps.

Btw, u might want to join the Brain, secondary cancer and Lung secondary cancer groups

Fear of the unknown is the worst thing. Once we know what we're facing, we find the strength to deal with it.
