A couple of days ago I had a Ct scan where they put an iodine dye through a cannula for the scan. The following day I felt really sick and I still have a nasty metallic taste in my mouth. I also had a headache, and was hot and cold for a bit. I was tested for an infection but had no infection markers so I am wondering if it was a reaction to the dye. I have had these scans before with no problem but it felt as if more dye was added this time. Has anyone else had this reaction and if so how long did it last?
Thanks
Hi
I had a reaction to the CT scan dye. I also developed a whole body rash a couple of days later. It was red, raised spots that were hot and itchy. I also felt generally unwell. The rash took around 2/3 weeks to go.
My consultant said it was an allergic reaction and that I need to avoid all contrast with any future scans.
Best thing to do is to get in touch with GP or hospital for some advice. I was prescribed piriton.

Hi Diffyclab
I had the severe rash reaction after my third scan with a contrast dye. No problems with the first 2.
I then had a year of 'no contrast' CT scans. Then a new radiographer arrived in the department, and challenged this. He said they could use a much 'kinder' contrast, that they use with new-born babies.
The A and E doctor agreed that they could try this, with my consent of course, and they would be on stand by in case I had a reaction. All went well, so I had the 'special' CT contrast dye after that. No problems! They also made sure it was delivered very slowly, as a faster delivery rate can also cause an adverse reaction.
Maybe you could ask about this the next time you have a scan. Having the contrast gives them a much better, more detailed image.
Good luck!
Kate
Thanks for your reply, I didn’t have the rash but the metallic taste hadn’t completely gone even now. I will talk to the hospital.
Hi, thank you for your reply. It’s interesting that you had no problems the first 2 times either, it seems it is variable. I didn’t know there was an alternative dye so that is something to discuss. Thank you.
I've got my first 6-month follow-up scan at the end of this month. When my letter came through, it says I have to fast for 4 hours before the scan. I didn't have this instruction on my previous monitoring scans so I'm wondering if the follow-up scan is different, or if they have changed the dose or type of dye.
Hi Diffy
I've had a few ct scans so far.
I've experienced the same symptoms as you, but only for a few minutes after the contrast dye was injected.
One on occasion, I experienced terrible pain in my vein/wrist as the dye was being injected which remained very tender for a week or so. At the time, it felt like my vein was going to rupture or something! Im sure it wasn't, but that's the best way to describe the feeling. After this same ct scan, I also had a very itchy rash around my neck and face - similar to heat rash. That latest about a week or so before going down.
I tell them about this experience every time now and they use a "more gentle" dye.
I hope you have a better experience in the future.
