Hi I’m 3 weeks post op tomorrow, wounds doing well. The only problem I have is pain like burning in my left hand kidney area the pain is terrible still can’t walk properly is this normal x

  • Hi ,

I'm pleased to hear that the wounds are healing well but sorry to hear that you are experiencing pain.  I'm afraid that the amount of pain we experience does seem to vary a lot.  I had very little right from the start and struggled to walk any distance but could walk short distances OK so don't know if others have experienced a similar pain or not.  What I would say is if you are uncertain about anything contact your medical team to check it out.  At the very least you should not be in pain so even if it is nothing of great concern they should be able to prescribe more effective painkillers.

I hope that you can get this resolved quickly.

Thank you Gragon, have spoken to my support nurse who spoke to the consultant and he said that it was nothing to worry about, but my god this pain is awful. I had a cancerous 5.5cm tumor removed and partial kidney. I am 51 and feel and walk as if I’m 81 xx

  • Good morning ,

It is good that you've talked to your team but you might want to see your GP about some pain relief.

I was about the same age when I had my op and as I said I had virtually no pain.  However, as a consequence I may have overdone things and a week after coming out of hospital I had to go back in for a week with a post operative bleed and was there for longer than I was after my operation.  I had several units of blood whilst there but took ages to recover after my discharge as I became anaemic and it took months for anyone to realise.  Iron tablets and I felt much better but if I learnt anything it was that if you are not happy go back and push them.

If the pain does not start to reduce go back to them again as you should gradually improve after the operation.

    All the best,

    Gragon

  • Hi Lou68, I was 48 when I'd my right kidney out, with a 9cm tumour on it. I was walking with a Zimmer frame,  n could hardly bear to stand up straight coz my wound was across my stomach ( tumour too  big to do from  back  surgeon said)

As Gragon said, definitely go back re pain relief if pain doesn't start to ease up. or if you've another concerns.
