just looking for advice or support really unsure who to turn to or who to talk to..

In May my dad was given the devastating news that he had a 11.8cm tumour on his right kidney, and that there where some shadows on his left lung. Fast forward to 19th June my dad had a nephrectomy aScream had his right kidney removed with everything surrounding it his adrenal gland and all the fat.. he has been recovering so well and looks amazing he managed to leave hospital after 3 nights.

Yesterday we went for our appointment at the oncologist where we was told the horrible news that the cancer was in fact in both lungs (lots of little white spots) and a 3.7cm tumour in the lower left lung. This has come as a massive shock to us as we thought we knew what we was dealing with but obviously not :( . We are now awaiting our appointment next week at the Chemo ward to start the Tivozanib tablets. Wondering if anyone has tried these and how things are going?

its definitely going to be a hard battle but we are going to give my dad all the love and support he needs to fight this awful cancer!

thank you for reading

  • Hello Danielle2018 and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear of the reason you are here. It must be hard for your dad after what he has been through and now getting this news. Great to know that you are doing what you can to support him. I am not familiar with Tivozanib, but I know most chemo regimens usually make people very tired and so dad will need your help around the house. regarding Tivozanib, there was a discussion  about it earlier in this group. You can see it if you click HERE . You may even like to join the conversation. We also have another group here which you may find it helpful to join Family and Friends . There you can share and get support from others looking after loved ones. I hope all goes well for your dad. Best wishes to you and your family.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

    Hi Danielle,

Sorry to hear about your Dad but good to know that he has been recovering well from the surgery.

In May 2016 I was diagnosed with a 10cm tumour and had a laparoscopic nephrectomy. I was T3N0M0 Grade 4. I had a quick recovery (2 nights in hospital). I was screened (CT scan with contrast) every 3-6 months and all was clear until Jan 2018. I now have mets in left lung and lymph node in chest.  I've been on Tivozanib since Feb and am finding it really very tolerable.  I have experienced only low level side effects: spiky blood pressure (i.e., up and down), fatigue (mainly since cycle 4 and quite manageable, I just go to bed a bit earlier), sore feet (but no blisters and my hands are fine) and cardboard mouth for a week or so each cycle (which means I can eat ok but if you blindfolded me I couldn't be sure what I was eating!).  All in all, really quite OK.  The main thing is I have seen 50% tumour shrinkage in the lung nodule (stability/no growth in lymph node) which is great news.  I know of someone who has been on Tivo for almost 2 years with virtually zero side effects and her disease is controlled (no growth).  Please do PM me if you have any questions.

My initial shock on diagnosis gave way quite quickly to a surge of hope and positivity.  The amazing recent advances in RCC treatments means I truly believe that I am now living with a chronic disease, much like diabetes or asthma.  This is a great time to be an RCC patient and I urge you to learn as much as possible about what's out there - it will really cheer you up to see what options there are for your Dad.

I hope he has a great Tivo experience - keep us posted!
