Low phosphate

Went for my 5th pembro on Monday 13th of October. Whilst there I was handed a prescription for Sandoz phosphate as my phosphates were low. It was for 2 tablets twice a day for 5 days so not for long. I asked whether I should have another blood test after I finished them but was told it was not necessary. I accepted this but with hindsight wondered how they would know whether my phosphates level normalised after these tablets without a blood test.

I've also since noticed that they contain a lot of sodium and as my blood pressure is just kept under control with the help of three BP meds this was a bit concerning. Just as well it is only five days worth. And to top it all they taste terrible.

I was wondering if anyone else has been prescribed these and how you got on with them. Or if you had low phosphate did you deal with it in a different way, maybe through diet ?

Many thanks

Vicki

  • Hello Vicky (

I am Brian, one of the Community Champions here on the online Community. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. I can't answer it myself as I have a different cancer, however by me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of the page and I hope seen and replied to by other members of the Kidney group.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Brian, thank you for your reply.

It's possibly the case that nobody else has had low phosphate so can't comment. Anyway, I've finished them now I'm pleased to say as they caused diarrhea as well which wasn't pleasant. I just thought it a bit odd that another blood test wasn't requested for afterwards and that the possible effect of the sodium on my blood pressure didn't seem to be considered.

But it did make change for me to have low levels of something as it's usually the other way round. High haemoglobin, high potassium although that came down on a subsequent blood test, high blood sugar so now pre-diabetic, high cholesterol and the BP of course. Just falling apart!

    Moan over, onwards and upwards.

  • Hello Vicky (

I almost suggested you could use the "Ask a Nurse" function but as you said 5 days, the post was 2 days old and the nurses can take 3 days to reply so no point. If those were the side effects i am pleased you have completed the course!Sweat smile.

I keep a watch on all my results on the NHS App - if you read my profile it was CKD that got me here in the first place, but caused by a different cancer.

Don't worry about having a rant - we all need to let off steam and it's better done here than with family and friends.

    Best wishes - Brian.
