Hi, I have been told that there are 2 options on treatment suitable for me, ablation and keyhole surgery.
I am thinking that ablation is the better for me because I can probably go home the same day (I live on my own and have 2 dogs) .
Keyhole, I'm assuming requires that I stay in hospital longer and would require me to pay for pet care. As I'm not working full time right now - I'm struggling with fatigue after EB Virus a few weeks ago- something I would like to know is, has anyone had ablation and would recommend it or is the better option to just get the damned thing cut out?
Thanks, I'm surprised you had only 2 or 3 days, I thought that it would have been a longer stay. I haven't had a date yet and not confirmed which surgery I'm having yet. I'm waiting for the appointment to discuss next steps. I have spoken to a consultant over the phone about both options of treatment but need to confirm which I will have.
The trouble with me it was only when I was in theatre that they had to do major surgery. They get you up very quickly to get you moving.
I was just trying to say that they had planned keyhole but in middle of operation had to change. They get you moving very quickly as it’s so important to get organs moving asap. Just wanted you to know it could change at last minute - hopefully it doesn’t for you
Hi I'm new here and came looking to see if anyone else had also had the cryo ablation and there experience of it I also have kidney cancer and I'm to high a risk for surgery so I'm hoping for this I don't see the consultant until the 15th of Oct let me know how you're getting on or if you'd like a chat all the best Lora
I was home the following day.
Hi,
I’ve just had my diagnosis and waiting for my surgery - keyhole partial nephrectomy. My consultant said it was likely to be a couple of days in hospital and I’ll need some assistance at home for the first few days.
I’ve got dogs too. I had abdominal surgery a few years ago and had them in kennels for a few days. They are big dogs - newf/lab mix and Newf/poodle mix and they were both very curious and very gentle with me when I came home. The difficulty was walking them as any pulling could cause issues. My older dog was fine and not an issue but the youngster needed someone to walk him for a few weeks so it very much depends on your dogs and recovery. If you can put them in kennels for a couple of nights and have some help with the walking that would make a difference.
For me, the long term assurance of removing the tumour is the deciding factor. I’m looking at the new year based on current waiting lists so I’ve got time to plan care for the dogs.
I had an appointment last week and decided on keyhole. Told me I'd probably be out the following day. My tumour is small so they think it will all work OK.
That’s good, especially getting out next day, what size is your tumour? Mine is 39mm so just fits into the small classification too. I had blood clots in July so I’m on blood thinners and have to wait another 3 months before I can come off them and have my surgery, mine will be robot assisted key hole too. How are you feeling generally? I’m pretty good, get a bit tired and definitely aware of the lump in my back - mine is right kidney at the back so I’m having a retroperitoneal operation where there go through side and back rather than the front.
