Hello - has anyone experienced SABR radiotherapy to a kidney tumour? I would be grateful to hear of peoples experiences and side effects they have encountered?Thank you! KQ

  • Hi

I haven't experienced it, but I may be having it depending on my biopsy, which is being done to decide whether the tumour can be cryogenically ablated, or done by radiation. I have already accepted the fact that the lesion is malignant (70% are). I've been under active surveillance for a year, so I'm not newly diagnosed (3rd brush with cancer)

Basically, it targets the tumour with high doses of radiation and unlike the usual process, it can be repeated. It's less invasive than surgery, but you need a number of sessions (less than the normal radiation process), but no overnight stays. I understand the results are very good.

It doesn't matter where you go, there you are
  • Yes, I had a course of radiotherapy after the cancer was spotted in a lymph node during one of the routine CT scans some time after the nephrectomy. The experience itself was not traumatic and I felt confident in the professionalism of the radio therapists  in targeting precisely. The consultant was also careful with the dosage, reconsidering to ensure less collateral damage.  I did feel very tired after the course of treatment but it is hard to say if that was the stress, my general health or as a direct result of the radiotherapy. This was last year and the oncologist is hopeful that the radiotherapy has worked.

I know that my situation is not the same as yours but I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you want any more specific information about what to expect.

    Best wishes.
